No..the wake happens elsewhere...usually at the matron or patron's house...

Depending on how the person died, yes you do see the body. And you do not have to look at the body if you don't want to.

what do you mean depending how they died???

and how do you not look, if theres a dead body lying there??

Well say they died in a horrific car crash and they were disfigured beyond recognition, they usually do not open the casket. And the funerals I have been, the body is in a small room where people can go into and most times everyone was in the hall talking. *shrugs*

i see so the casket is another room, so you dont have to see??

im sure i read a post kitten, you found your dad dead?? have i got that right. thats so sad

Yes I did. He had kidney cancer and I quit work to take care of him full time. He took up smoking again, so I left for 10 minutes to go get him some and when I came back home I found him lying in the floor dying. It still haunts me, but Im glad I was there to tell him how much I loved him.flowerforyou

Hi Deb......

Funerals here can happen quick or take a while each family does it diffrent so there is no set rule.

As far as a wake you guys started that. You or one of your neighbors started it any way.

When cooper startted being used and was formed into a cups people would use it for their Alcohol dronks. Well Alcohol and cooper creates some sort of poison and when people would drink a lot of Alcohol in a cooper cup they would pass out in a coma state and they would appear dead. Then some of these dead people, not dead at all would WAKE up. So as to avoid burring a live person they would take the person that drank him/herself to “death” and put the body in their homes so the family could see if the person would WAKE up…….

funerals just dont happen quick in the uk.

you know i read somewhere some people have been buried alive, and they found scratch marks in the coffin, this was when medical equipment was crap. but is that true???

I've been to several wakes, and I've enjoyed them all... The hardest "american" funerals to take are the ones for children... especially open casket...
That can break your heart...
I've had a hard time with the ones I've attended...

With Equescent thoughts...

There was a medical show on it, not long ago and it's an extremely rare thing, although that didn't used to be the case.

i would think, if you were buried alive, you wouldnt live long as there wouldnt be much oxygen, as your 6 feet under the ground.

does anyone know how funerals are done in very poor countries??

I'm majorly sleep deprived and my typing is already poor, but it did used to happen. Precautions are now such that it can't happen. This is graphic, but once embalming fluid is put in you are dead, if you weren't before. It's a fear of mine and the trip to Scotland was great but they talked about that some. The Internet will provide the info. Maybe on TLC.
