look for video cameras that are HDTV compatible. most decent-quality pro-sumer units will typically go for around three-to-four grand at most electronics stores, like Fry's Electronics. canon makes some REALLY good HDV cameras, as does panasonic... sony's good if you want the brand name.

i'd stay away from film cameras (35mm and others) because that's a format that is quickly on its way out. in fact, very few film companies even bother to use film anymore, as it's just a pain to convert to digital for editing.

new to using Video cameras? I use a Mini, dvd one at the moment, i dislike how each cd only last 30 minutes. I would recomend a HD camcorder preferably one with a hardrive. The quality camcorder depends on how much u wanna spend..... Want something designed for residential use? Id go with the HD sony, or spend a little more and get a cannon one. Want commercial? unsure, but they run 3,000+ depends on what u are doing. Porn however, id stick with the sony =) LOL

If cost is not a factor..
One of the better camera's I've used is the Canon XL2.

yeah. the canon xl1 or xl2s are the ones most commonly used by prosumers and some production companies. sony makes an equivalent camera, but you'll be paying a premium for the nameplate.

canon is also starting to make a lesser-cost HDV camera that uses mini-DV tapes. it's smaller, but has the much-improved lens, and is a little less pricey.
