I can hold up a rock and say that this rock is a tiger repelent. Now my only evidence is that there are no tigers around. So how much do you want to pay for this rock to take on your vacation to inda?

Very often this debate takes on the characteristics of talking to a 5 year old who is trying desperately to justify their behavior.

Sometimes, actually way more often then not... The ends are not justified by the means.

Especially in the case of torture.

If torture worked?
Christianity would have never made it through the Romans.

They were threatened with (and were reminded of the threat constantly, by the carcasses of their friends hanging from crossed timbers) crucifixion, being burned or fed to animals, simply because they would not renounce Jesus. Countless people chose to die painfully.

Look up Brave Heart or Joan of Ark... True stories that prove instances of inhumane behavior not changing the will of people under duress by that behavior.

We all have heard of prisoners of War who were compelled to admit to participating in war crimes. Why not? Sure it helps influence the world view.. but that does not put their fellow men at arms in jeopardy.. and is, in itself... a lie. Getting someone to be truthful about sensitive information? That can be difficult and highly untrustworthy. We have at our disposal many other ways to gain sound intelligence...that we obviously are not actively using, if you consider what has been written, both in press and by sources within our intelligence community.

Torture...in my humble opinion... Is simply a very lazy, unintelligent, bullying method to get unreliable data...that has to be confirmed or denied as truth anyway.. or you just get several more people to torture... then more unreliable information.

I forget who the source of this was, but I recall that he was retired military intelligence officer:

"Torture is the refuge of the lazy, the stupid, and the pseudo-tough."

I am still a firm believe that in certain, extreme cases, there is a time and place for everything. But you are right....intelligence officials USUALLY have better ways of getting their information. Just gotta use those brains.... ....
