BUFFALO, N.Y. — Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik required lifesaving surgery after severing his carotid artery, his agent told The Associated Press on Monday.

Zednik had surgery Sunday night and was in stable condition at a Buffalo hospital after losing a significant amount of blood during the game at Buffalo earlier in the day, agent David Schatia said. Schatia didn't have further details because he had just arrived in Montreal following a trip oversees.

Zednik was sliced across the right side of the throat by teammate Olli Jokinen's skate in a frightening accident midway through the third period of Buffalo's 5-3 victory.

OUCH

I watched it live online.... Just makes me think that could happen to me while I am out there.... He is ok and I felt for him being an Ex-Capital, just happy to hear he was in stable condition.

Remind me of Malarchuk...but they actually showed the blood spurting from his neck on tv....just sickening.

This site below has a video of it for those who have not seen it.

How could they just go on and finish the game after something like that happened? That is in my opinion disrespectful.

I havn't seen the video, but local radio stations have played the announcers who were in the game at the time. It sounded really bad too. One of the guys was like "i havn't seen that much blood in my life!" and the other guy said "well I have.....but i won't go there"

I was like WTF laugh

It was pretty bad, you can just see his blood spray across the ice

Atleast the player is still alive after that. If I were him, I'd take a long vacation drinker

What gets me is they say at no time was he in danger. WTF how can you lose 5 units of blood and not be in danger. Malarchuk is the Goaltending coach for My Columbus Blue Jackets now and they interviewed him yesterday here in town and he said it looked pretty bad to him and it brought back some bad memories (malarchuk's cut actually made it to the juggular though)
I am glad that Zednick is OK, maybe this will help persuade some of the current players to were neck guards.
