Topic: bring a chat room here on jsh!! | |

Maybe you might understand that not everyone has the typing skills of a college professor..maybe you might understand just because someone isn't trying to woo someone with their incredible typing skills..if you "deciphor" the third grade english and see what their saying..you might be surprised what you see...
Take a step back and see it for what it is...a different way to interact...you'll still have your hands full with your day job of deciphoring the stupidity in the forums..and the people who want a chat room will have their bombardment of ignorant statements like "ASL"..either way..everyone would be happy.. Think about it - and be honest. How many times a day do you read something posted in here and just shake your head in wonder?? There ya go. Pretty much constantly, assuming I can actually decipher the butchered third-grade English well enough to even comprehend what's attempting (usually unsuccessfully) to be said. On the other hand, I suppose it's not that difficult to decode "I'm bored" even when both words are misspelled. As for chatrooms -- Mike and VC have consistently said that the problem is in the monitoring. I've been on sites that use chatrooms, and all I've seen is 30 people all parroting "asl?" every time someone new comes in, and endlessly stepping all over each other's occasional stabs at a real subject. Chaos and stupidity don't suddenly become more palatable just because someone tosses out the words "chat room." If they ever do add chat rooms here, I won't be using them. I'm perfectly comfortable dealing with illiteracy one post at a time -- I don't need a room where people are tossing it at me from every direction. |

To read or interpret (ambiguous, obscure, or illegible matter). This is a good example of the sort of thing I'm talking about. People who want a chat room would be better off to go where there is one. And just to clear up two points: I'm not trying to woo anyone -- I have a girlfriend. And I'm probably the worst typist you'll ever see. I do check for mistakes before I post, though. It's just as easy to get these things right. |

Jen... I'm dead serious about this question. Is there some new kind of chat room I'm not familiar with? Do they have new features since I've been in one?? How is a chat room any more private than a public forum??? I'm not trying to be mean or sarcastic. I don't have any hidden agenda or meaning with this question. I'm asking for more information. I've never been in a chat room that used mics and cams. How would that work? Isn't that a one-on-one thing? But then isn't that just IM and not a chat room?? |

I know there are a lot of members who would love to have a chatroom on the site. We've had this feature requested this many, many times, and it is something we would love to provide if we felt we could do it right.
The issue with having a chatroom on the site, though, is that we can't monitor it to the degree we feel is necessary to ensure a quality experience. Unfortunately, the forums already require quite a bit of moderating - to keep JSH the great place that it is, there's a tremendous amount of work done by the volunteer moderators and the admins to make sure that the forums remain friendly and fun. Moderating a chat room is 100 times harder, and we simply don't feel we can provide a great chat room experience without adequate moderation. Until we feel like we could provide a quality experience, we won't add chatrooms to the site. And unfortunately, I don't see us being able to provide a great chat experience anytime soon. Now, there have also been a LOT of personal attacks and insults on this topic. As you all should know, those attacks are against the forum rules. This is a warning to ALL of you - personal attacks will not be tolerated. Further attacks will result in a suspension of your posting privileges, so please, let's keep the discussion civil. All of you have, in fact, demonstrated very clearly on this topic exactly why we will NOT be adding chat rooms to the site. |
