http://www.magicjack.com/

It's called Magic Jack.

You simply plug it into your USB port on your pc and plug in your land line and your all set.

My mom was telling me about this when she saw an add on tv, the only problem I have is I don't know is if some one runs into a problem what number you would call for supposed.

You pay $40 bucks I think altogether and it's for the whole year for phone service, local and everything, and there after words you pay $20 bucks I think it is.

Sounds kinda cool but I'm just a bit iffy about the whole thing, even though there backed by the fcc I think it is.

I have one, and it's probably the best $40.00 I've ever spent.

It's not readily apparent on their site, but they probably do have one.
The service is reliant upon your broadband internet connection, so all help & support is web-based.

You mean like the FREE chat rooms, advertised on this site, that cost $50 a month????

No it's a new home phone service. It uses your pc and phone line.

And I don't think I was advertising and if I was and it's not allowed then I'm sorry, however I was asking a question too.

Oh okay.

Do you have to keep your computer on at all times in order to get phone calls ?

Unfortunately, yes. I have it attached & running on an old P3-800 system (no monitor..use Windows XP Remote Desktop to access), along with my home security system. The weak point is power, so I have a small UPS ($49.95) to support my ADSL modem, the HSS unit, and the P3 system. I rarely lose my internet connection itself. My main computer system is attached to a much larger UPS.

Ok.

Sorry what is the UPS and HSS as well as P3 ?

Just a little confused on that part is all.

UPS = Uninterruptible Power System (battery backup)
HSS = Home Security System
P3-800 = Pentium III processor - 800MHz speed

Oh okay thank you for telling me that.

Maybe I should look into the Battery backup.

Also once you have the magic jack hooked up to your pc, does it tell you what your phone will be ? And can you have it unlisted if you want it to be ?.

It will walk you through the activation process. You will be offered a choice of what numbers are available by state/area code. Not all states are available yet, but new ones are added all the time. This can be irritating, but by using a 3rd party service (like GrandCentral) you can get a virtual number (possibly your actual area and/or prefix) to forward your MagicJack number to. This is what I have done. GrandCentral is by user invitation only, but I can send you an invite if you decide to hookup.
As far as I can tell, the numbers are not listed in the standard directories. Mine is registered to "Lordling".

Oh okay I get what your saying.

Thank you for answering my questions.

I might just have to do this and save me a big load of money every month. Because I have a bundle with my cable company I'm with I kinda feel at times I'm being over charged here and there.
