Well It is all in the persons own interests, if one seeks to be around others and receive training from a Coven, ( If they can find one that will eccept new members)than that is a Great way to start, but I started solitary and have been in covens, and am Hp of one now in Texas, but either way is very effective, you just need to read , read, read, practice, practice, practice

Well the answer is No you don't have to be a Hereditary Witch to be a true Witch.

From what I've always understood, there wasn't any one particular way of being a Wiccan.

The traditional beliefs are rites and traditions that pull on the powers in and around us for the drawing and expending of energy for the power of good. This is a very basic explanation though, it is more complex than this.

Are you polytheistic or monotheistic?

I think the Coven is more effective, being as that you have others around you, and the energies are stronger, you see and feel to be a part of something special, even though you are as a solotary, but being with others helps you learn more, and keeps you learning and enjoying you faith with others is a wonderful feeling.
And as far as the basics beleifs are, You can do what you wilt, but you do not I repeat DO Not Harm any one or thing in any magickal working you do.
The law of 3, it comes back if u do good or bad 3 times worse or better.
We believe in the Goddesses and of the Gods, even though their are some paths that only worship the Goddess.

I believe that there is definitely power(s) that are higher than us, but as for monotheism/polytheism, I'm not really all that sure. I was raised as a Christian, but I've always felt extremely out of place in that setting. So I really don't know, I know I'm very open to new ideas/beliefs if that helps :)
