I've always hated the phrase "serious relationship". It paints a picture of doom and gloom. Relationships are about enjoying each other's company. The main thing to take seriously is the commitment made to each other. Therefore trying to start with "serious" has immediate expectations of commitment before you've taken the time to know one another.
