Just a heads-up for all the MySpace users -- this comes from the Thursday, December 27, 2007, edition of the Chicago Sun-Times:

"Myspace" to become "Myspam" in March

Myspace, the popular meeting/dating internet site frequented by naive teenagers and those who ruthlessly prey upon them, has announced it will change its name to "Myspam" as of March 15.

"We believe in the whole 'truth in advertising' concept," said Reginald Cucurullo, Myspace director of public relations. "The fact is, Myspace has turned into a haven for band spam, friend request spam, blog spam, and webcam spam. We did a recent survey and discovered 63% of our users are spammers. And, as every good businessman knows, you have to cater to the largest demographic segments of your clientele base."

Myspace began operations in 1932 as a small greeting card company named "MyCards" in Youngstown, Ohio, but was purchased by NewsCorp in 2003, at which time the greeting card operations were shut down and the company became computerized.

Elliott Sweezle, CEO of Mycards from 1982-1998, said, "This is a sad day indeed. When I took over as CEO, all we wanted to do was make cards with pictures of little puppies and bunnies on them. The puppies and bunnies would always be saying cute things like 'Get well soon' or 'Hey, it's only the right front fender.' It was a different world, less violent, not so loud and abrasive. We took lunch breaks, life just made more sense."

Cucurullo told reporters that Myspam would use its vast resources to provide spam recipients with the best spam possible. "When we make the changeover in March," he explained, "we will eliminate all non-spammers from our user pool. Since all users will then also be spammers, all users will get every piece of spam generated from every other user. This is a much more efficient system, because it gets rid of the non-productive users who aren't generating any spam."

When asked about recent surveys that indicate the majority of internet users are actually annoyed by spam, Cucurullo said, "Well, I see that as being their problem. Keep in mind, Myspam is a free service, and will continue to remain free after the change. As my Aunt Gladys used to say, 'You get what you pay for.' I've seen the surveys, I know there are people who claim not to like spam. I don't believe them. Remember that show, 'The Facts of Life'? Well, a lot of people claimed not to like that show, but it was on the air for years and years and years. Somebody was watching, I can tell you that much. I watched it a few times myself, that one girl was kind of cute. No, not the snooty blonde, the tomboyish one. I kind of liked her."

Addison Knecht, a media analyst for the Munich-based Komputerwelt, Inc., said that the changeover may have little impact in the long run. "We have tracked Myspace trends over the last 18 months and have noticed that 93% of all 'friend requests' are nothing more than thinly-veiled spam," Knecht remarked. "Most of them are attempts to persuade recipients to go to another site for the purpose of viewing nude photographs of the sender. However, it turns out that the sender is never the person depicted in the original 'friend request.' In fact, most of the time, the nude photographs are actually of Regis Philbin."

The Sun-Times has been unable to determine whether there are any connections between Mr. Philbin and Myspam. Investigations are ongoing.

Cucurullo later issued a press release, in which he stated that NewsCorp would be establishing a new site for users who will be forced to leave Myspam in March. "We realize that not everyone wants to receive a thousand pieces of spam a day," Cucurullo wrote, "and, to that end, we will be creating a new internet venue for those people. Newscorp is not some cold, unfeeling, insensitive monolith ignorant of the needs and desires of the masses. Our goal is to provide a safe, positive place on the net, for all users, spammers and non-spammers alike."

The new site will be called SpamCamel and will open March 29.
