White pine branch for pine needle tea

This tree is a white pine tree. It is a great tree to know and identify as a wild edible and a good survival skill to know. Not only for survival, but it’s also a great one to know for family camping and survival skills. It’s very easy to identify and has no poisonous look-alikes. The white pine is the one with the 5 long thin needles together. Just grab a branch and pull the needles off. They are just a few inches long and when you hold one little bunch, you’ll see that 5 of them are joined together at one end.

Not only can you make pine needle tea out of the needles, which we did and it is surprisingly good, but the inner bark is also surprisingly good. I watch the survival shows on TV now and again and even though they often do stupid things (it makes good TV) they do some good things too. However I was watching this one show where the guy was in the Alaskan wilderness and had nothing to eat. Right behind him I swear that I could see white pine trees. I figure he had to no, but was just trying to be dramatic for TV. All you have to do is peel the bark off the tree and the white sticky/slimy inner bark can be peeled off easily and cooked/boiled or even eaten raw if you chew it enough and it’s tasty and nutritious.
