HOUSTON - A couple accused of beating their toddler to death, tucking her body in a plastic box and dumping it in Galveston Bay were indicted Wednesday on charges of capital murder.
Galveston County District Attorney Kurt Sistrunk said he had yet to decide whether to seek the death penalty against Kimberly Dawn Trenor and her husband, Royce Clyde Zeigler II, in the death of Trenor’s 2-year-old daughter, Riley Ann Sawyers.
The grand jury also charged Trenor and Zeigler with tampering with evidence, a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison.
The couple was charged in November with tampering with evidence and injury to a child. DNA tests have since proven the body belonged to Riley, allowing the charges to be upgraded.
Trenor, 19, told authorities that she and her 24-year-old husband beat and tortured Riley to death in July in a discipline session that veered out of control. She said they hid the girl’s body in a shed for two months before dumping it in the bay.
The box containing the body washed ashore and was found by a fisherman in October. Authorities dubbed the girl “Baby Grace” as they spent weeks searching for her identity and family.
Tommy Stickler Jr., Trenor’s attorney, said he was disappointed with the indictment and believes the facts do not merit a capital charge.
“But considering the amount of public pressure, I’m not surprised,” he added.
Zeigler’s attorney, Neal Davis III, did not return a telephone call seeking comment. He scheduled a Thursday news conference to discuss the case.
Death or life in prison
An attorney for the toddler’s father, Robert Sawyers, and paternal grandmother, Sheryl Sawyers, told The Galveston County Daily News this week that the family has reservations about Trenor facing the death penalty. If Trenor is convicted of capital murder, the only other sentence she could receive is life in prison without parole.
According to Trenor’s attorney, Tommy Stickler Jr., Zeigler wanted Trenor to spank Riley with a belt when she failed to say things like “please” and “yes sir” or “no sir.” Zeigler didn’t believe Trenor was doing it, however, because the 2-year-old’s behavior wasn’t changing.
The fatal beating happened after Zeigler stayed home from work to make sure his wife was following his discipline plan, Stickler said.
In a statement to authorities, Trenor said the girl was beaten with leather belts, had her head held underwater in a bathtub and then was thrown across a room, her head slamming into a tile floor.
An autopsy revealed that Riley suffered three skull fractures, but the cause of death has not been determined.
Zeigler’s attorney has said Trenor’s credibility will become an issue once all the facts are examined.

as a mother, it is my worse nightmare come true. how in HELL can a woman allow such acts to be commited against her own blood!!! this sort of thing litterally makes me SICK!!! i am trembeling at the very thought. as a mother, she should have had enough sinse to leave his ass. what kind of weak minded ***** allows this to happen. they both deserve the electric chair cause that is the most cruel, most vicous thing someone can do. I know it made me cry when I first read the story. And the stupid b**** is pregnant again! They should take it away from her.

they will get it back in prison, the gaurds will tell the inmates what they did, then death sentence will be carried out. sorry i seem so bitter, but ya know what, it was a BABY, inocent and knowing no wrong, no understanding. they stole inocence, and it breaks my heart at the thought of such cruel and inhuman people being permitted such a perfect thing as a child.

ya know, my 3 year old twins coulnt care less when i tell them no, or dont you do it, but they are babies, and i love them more than life, i cant see spanking them, much less killing them, ya im sick at my stomach

I don't care how sad your life story, there is no excuse for this. And you're right. Let some of those inmates get hold of them. Inmates detest child killers. Only thing is, they'll probably isolate this B**** for her own safety.

I know my daughter gets on my nerve sometimes, and makes me really angry...but never in a million years would I do something like that...and I'd damn sure not let anyone else lay a finger on her either....

just want to say that the couple should suffer the worst God can give them................there are people who want their children and can't take care of them *like me* and other couples who want children and can't have children............what they did makes me SICK

seperate her from the rest till she has the new babay, then its on, those guards wont have any compassion either. it just blows my mind, i have 5 kids total, and if you think i dont catch hell and they dont misbehave on a regular basis, well think again. but thats called growing up. thats what we do, even as adults. and for some man to decide how to punish that baby, not even her own father!!! and for her to allow it. thats not right, its more than weakness, its out right stupidity. oooohhhh if some man EVER makes the istake of hurting any one of my kids, there wont be a court to decide his fate

yes amber, i get that, i cant believe some people can have children when there are people who would give nothing but love and commit to giving a child the very best. she never thought of giving that child to her father, and some one should teach these woman bout "adoption" it is selfish and hateful to hold on to something you dont want, and i just cant understand what these woman think about!!!

Think how controlling that guy must be if he actually stayed home from work to ensure his wife meted out the discipline to his satisfaction. She doesn't even look right in her photo. Weird.

i cant imagine. i am so overly protective of my kids, and people think im insane. her poor father must be miserable right now, how do you get over something like that?? I grew up on galveston island, right over on the west end, so i know that gulf goes out forever. by the GRACE OF GOD HIMSELF that baby was found. it was meant to be cause she carried yet another inocent baby. i am so greatful they got busted, one less dead baby at his hands

i hope in my heart the baby has family who will take him or her in. i know people who have lost their kids to welfare and they put family member thru some rigorous questions and they visit the homes, check out the income, bills etc. its a frightening process cause its really hard to go thru.in a way its good, because they make sure the child will be in a stable enviroment, on the other hand, take grandparents who are on a fixed income, or sibling who have been convicted of so much as theft and served time, who would otherwise care and love the child dont stand a chance
