Topic: Has anyone ever quit smoking?

I'm finding it very hard to quit and need advise. I am just trying to break the habit while I am young. And yes I do know it causes cancer and that isn't going to help me quit lol. I need stories on how other people kicked the habit so that I can somehow push myself to quiting. I won't quit drinking though lol drinker

My father tried many methods. The one method that worked for him 10 years ago was Wellbutrin and the patch.

i quit smoking over 14yrs ago and had no problems.. i can tolerate the smell but it gags me:tongue: :tongue:

my aunt and uncle quit cold turkey as did I.. but my friend tried the patch and hated it.. someone else I know used the gum and it worked.. but with the gum/lozenge you have to be careful bc a lot of people end up becoming addicted to that

you will probably find it easier to quit if you take a time out on the drinking.
it takes around three weeks to start a new habit or to change one that you already have. that being said you should look at what triggers you to smoke, then try to avoid the triggers as best you can.

I have none to give. I'm one of those insane
"cold turkey"... mind-over-matter people. You make up your mind and ya do it....

Course having children around and the desire to grow old enough to see my grandbabies helped motivate me... (my kids are only 4 and 7... I got awhile to go).

no i could never quit but you could try snuff.not the chewing stuff but the tobacco you snort.I do that from time to time when im somewhere i cant smoke

Quitting is mind over matter, We all say we are in control yet we cannot control certain things regarding the brain. Having said this focus on the goal and the motivation. With these 2 in play you can conqueor anything.

Finding your triggers and avoiding them does help just like mdl stated. You probably should try to find something new you like to do that you haven't related to smoking. Do it when you want a smoke. Exercise helps, too. Good Luck!!!flowerforyou

I quit cold turkey about 9 years ago. Best thing I ever did for myself health wise. I agree what the other person said about cutting back on going out to bars and drinking. Smoking and drinking go hand in hand. The first three days of quiting are hell. After that it gets easier and easier. After the first year, you are pretty much in the clear. Continuing to go out drinking at bars is what is going to be the absolute hardest thing for you. Tossing a few back, hanging with the guys, someone lights up, you say, "**** it, give me one of those".

I don't know about other ex-smokers but I now can't stand the smell of smoke especially going into casino's or other establishments that have a lot of smoke.

I don't suggest any of the patches or gum or substituting for another type of tobacco. If you are going to quit, do it cold turkey. If you are strong willed and really want to quit, you can do it. You are probably going to be a real bear around your family and friends so give them a forewarning. I knew a guy who quit cold turkey and every time he got an urge to smoke, he would go for a short walk. He ended up losing 20 pounds from the walks alone. He was a hardcore smoker.

By the way, how bad is your habit? 1/2 pack, 1 pack or more per day?

cold turkey man, just stop, no substitutions or nothin. takes will power. thats thebest, takes a week or tw but after that , ur good to go

Damn everyone is helpful lol. Yeah I might take a break on the drinking to quit smoking. Thank you all though. I appreciate the care from all of you.:smile:

Cold turkey the only way. been free 3 years now

All substitutes just prolongs the suffering.

I quit for 6 months once, I did the cold turkey thing and found that candy or gum helped the urge to have something in your mouth. I fell off the wagon though and have not tried again. The time is coming again though for me because it is beginning to annoy me again. Good Luckflowerforyou

WELL I GOTTA TELL YOU I AM CELEBRATING 6 MONTHS TODAY OF QUITING SMOKING , WHAT WORKED FOR ME WAS ONE WEEK OF THE PATCH AND THEN COLD TURKEY THE REST OF THE WAY ,IT SUCKS BUT I PROMISE YOU IN 90 DAYS YOU WILL FEEL 100 TIMES BETTER. DONT BE A SLAVE TO THE CIGGARETTES COMPANYS ANY MORE.

My grandmother quit on her 60th birthday, just put the pack down after having smoked for 45 years, and never picked it up again. And lived another 34 years after that. Her son, my father, tried and tried to quit and never could, and died young, of lung cancer. I'm glad I've never smoked a cigarette in my life!

i have - dozens of times!! drinker but the last time
was best - it was in 1992. i have not smoked since then.

here was my tactic.

try to go for a day....keep very busy and stay away from
any friends or acquaintances who smoke. do not own any at
the time. if you can make it through the day, try for two...
if you can make two try to go for a week, then two then a
month. in my experience the first three days are by far
the worst. it was the hardest thing i ever did. period.

once you've gone a week, the desire is much much less and
once you've gone for 2 weeks you should be clean enough to
go for a year or more. once, i quit for a year and relapsed.

but eventually i knew this bad habit had to go....and if
i could make it stick then you can too.

good luck really. it is worth it. it's your life and health.
