Topic: Quantum-portation – Short story – Part one | |

It was in all the sci fi movies for the longest time ever so, everyone was famaliar with the idea of warp, but actually getting there was a stretch. The end result looked like magic and so common place now no one cared much but to batter an eyelid. Small cigar shaped crafts zipped to and throw around the solar system, but reaching the nearest star was still out of the question. If seemed the solars edge was the limits of what laws of physics would allow for now.
Well it would never be left at that, once a limitation had been reached, the goal post simply moved, and it was then just a matter of reaching for the next limitation. Sue, she took a different approach to the idea, being part of a more exotic branch of theorists, she had found her place amongst the more hippified idealists, she wasn't a hippy her self, but found their out of the institute box approach more interesting although taboo in institutionalised circles. Never the less, she took it upon her self to approach these new problems from the outside in. Current physics limited them now to the solar system, and massive amounts of energy was required to jump the huge space between stars. No craft could generate such a massive amount of energy. Sue went back to her circle of hippy physicists and smoked pot to forget about all the formalisms of her institutionalised brain washing. She drowned her self in their free life spiritual philosophies, and surfed the endless waves of ideas bufting her floating surfboard mind. Her circle of wise sage, free thinkers or just simply self deluding fools, tiny people who felt they knew something about laws of attraction and electron universes. These people needed to go and get jobs. As much as she enjoyed their cocoon world, she would have to once again return to the 'real' world and come up with at least an idea no matter how far fetched as a possible stepping stone to this quandry. And she did, but they weren't going to like it. The problem was always energy, and no space craft could ever generate or carry enough of it to 'jump the void' as they where calling it. But she had stumbled on an idea by one of her hippy philosopher friends, she was going to steal it, and use it, why not, he wasn't doing anything with it. He was just out there, they'd had high hopes for this guy, but he just flunked, and simply dropped off the map. Dan, or at least that's what everyone in the circle knew him as. One starry bonfire night around the sandy beach fire he dug into his theory about quantum teleportation. Bottle in hand, bud in his mouth, sat half cocked, laid back, arm around his girl. Puffing rings in the night air, smug grin, and with a sexy ***** like that he'd had it all. “You see I got this thing all figured out like, you know, that whole quantum thing”. He gulped down a little more of what ever it was he was drinking. “You see, teleportation happens naturally” If he'd been in any other circle, no one would have grasped what the hell this guy was talking about, he would have been percieved as a wacko. But he was in good company, the company of wannabe dropouts and losers. “I've got it figured” he started again, his girl resting against his chest with her arm nestled on his belly. Everybody else around the fire either looking at him, or the fire. “You know, atomic particles naturally jump in and out of space, they jump between two points of like resonance” and that was it. It didn't register to Sue all that much at the time, but it would later prove key, but that idea had to go through much phases of maturation in her mind. After that Dan started making out with her girl, you couldn't comprehend why, it wasn't guru speech, accept maybe to that girlfriend of his. |
