The danger with removing the past (Human History) is that people will make the same mistakes over again.

the past can't be removed, objects can

and when they are, it does not remove the past, but can remove a constant reminder of the pains of the past,,,,or the angst of feeling like an unwelcome guest

can you imagine if there were statues of the terrorists from 9/11? do you think people will say,,,'well, it is part of history, removing it wont change history?'

or bill cosby statues

or farrakhan,,,,,

many things happen in history, but statues generally are seen as an HOMAGE to a person, and there are certain people that citizens do not want to pay to maintain 'homage' to...

I see hear what you're saying, but people need reminding constantly I'm afraid. sad but true. It not a case of paying homage in most cases, apart from the silly radicals.

All I want to mention about this, is that the title isn't quite right. The controversy over Columbus and the various celebrations of him isn't a recent one at all. It's been going on for a VERY long time.

Oh. And someone above suggested that any opposition to things like this, is an attempt to destroy or obscure America's heritage or history, and that's just not a logical argument. If anything, the common habit that most societies and countries have of glorifying their past, and ignoring the not-so-nice parts, is the real destruction of their own heritage.
