There are plenty of reasons for poor spelling and writing habits. I believe it is very rarely an indicator of a person being unintelligent.

For instance..

What if the person is an immigrant and just now learning english, or lives in another part of the world where english is not the native language?

Many people use slang on these sites. Which can appear to be poor spelling, but in their age group or peer group, it is an acceptable way to communicate.

Maybe they have a learning disability, such as dyslexia.

Maybe they have not had the opportunities most of us have had for an education, due to their home life (or lack there of) as a child.


They also could be very new to computers and not aware of how to use spell/ grammar checks.


My excuse is:
Even though I am a skilled IT Engineer, I am a horrible typist. The wireless keyboard I use is black with white letters on the keyboard. Only, the E,R,T,O,A,S,D,N,M are all worn off. Since I type mostly by sight.. I'm pretty much screwed if I don't check my work.

I know a guy who probably has a 5th grade education (That may be kind). We are the same age. He spent most of his adolescent and all of his teen years institutionalized. Due to abuses he experienced, he lived on the streets. Which can drive anyone to do desperate things. The only system that would take him, was the youth correctional facilities. Back in the 60's and 70's... Education was not high on their list of priorities.

Despite his issues with mathematics, language, spelling, grammar...and I believe a very high probability of an undiagnosed learning disability. He is a highly skilled artist, has an incredible amount of common sense, street smarts, determination, ambition, and ability.

I think it also has to do with where you come from... my fiance types with a drawl... lol... really...

he says "has" instead of "as" and he'll type it that way too. I think it's cute.

Besides... just cause a guy can't spell or use correct grammar, it shouldn't be a reflection of their character. Look beneath the surface, ladies... that's where the keepers are...

That's something I have a hard time ignoring. If it's one or two problems, that's one thing. If it's one after the other, I get annoyed because I hate trying to decipher what someone is saying. I'm not perfect, mind you, but I rarely let careless mistakes get by.
