I have learned that it is neither, as well as possibly "both and much more."

When you are very young, it is usually a combination of luck and instincts, which results in your finding a genuinely good match or not. All you can look for, is what you understand, through the normal haze of DNA driven lust.

Later, when you know more about yourself, you can begin trying to find a match in a more organized way.

But what makes any relationship "serious" or not, is how "serious" the people in it are. Whether they are in the relationship for each other AND for the relationship itself, or just for immediate personal gratifications.

Dedication and understanding for each other, can make up for a tremendous number of other factors.
