A Falcon 9 booster rocket exploded on the launch pad in Cape Canaveral, Florida, as tropical storm Hermine bore down on the area. An Israeli satellite that was to provide Facebook broadband to Africa was lost in the explosion, SpaceX confirmed.

The blast shook buildings some distance away, according to witnesses who reported it on social media. Thick black smoke could be seen rising from the pad, while secondary explosions continued.

The plume of smoke was tracked on weather radar.

There were no casualties from the explosion, and no threat to the general public, said the US Air Force's 45th Space Wing, which controls the Cape Canaveral launch station.

Citing NASA security, one source reported that the rocket blew up during “wet dress rehearsal.” This is the type of pre-launch test that uses actual liquid propellant, but may or may not involve the payload.

Brevard County Emergency Management Office said there was no danger to the general public, and said the rocket exploded during "static test fire."

SpaceX’s next launch was supposed to be on Saturday, September 3, with a Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Israeli communications satellite Amos-6 into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO).

The satellite would have provided broadband internet coverage to sub-Saharan Africa, as part of an initiative spearheaded by Facebook.

SpaceX confirmed that the payload was lost in the explosion.

Thursday's explosion did not involve a reused Falcon 9 booster. SpaceX announced on Tuesday that it would use a recovered rocket to launch a SES communications satellite "later this year," probably sometime in December.

Rocketry is dangerous business!
If the Propellants are off some, even through a slight Malfunction, your Rocket becomes a Bomb instead!

SpaceX rocket explodes on pad during unmanned test

An unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded on the launch pad during a test Thursday morning, destroying the rocket and a $195 million Israeli satellite called Amos-6.

The company said that no people were injured in the accident.

"SpaceX can confirm that in preparation for today's standard pre-launch static fire test, there was an anomoly on the pad resulting in loss of the vehicle and its payload," SpaceX said in a statement on Thursday morning. "Per standard procedure, the pad was clear and there were no injuries."

According to the 45th Space Wing, the explosion occurred at 9:07 am Thursday.

The test was in advance of a planned Saturday launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, which is next to NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

Buildings several miles away shook from the blast, and multiple explosions continued for several minutes. Dark smoke filled the overcast sky. A half-hour later, a black cloud hung low across the eastern horizon.

NASA — SpaceX's major customer — said the explosion occurred at Launch Complex 40 at the Air Force station, and Kennedy emergency staff was on standby. At the same time, personnel were monitoring the air for any toxic fumes.

The rocket was supposed to hoist the Israeli satellite this weekend.

The initial blast sounded like lightning, but was followed by the sounds of more explosions. SpaceX is one of two companies shipping supplies to the space station for NASA. It's also working on a crew capsule to ferry station U.S. astronauts; that first flight was supposed to come as early as next year.

Images shared on Twitter after the explosion showed black smoke coming from the launch pad.

The rocket that exploded was a Falcon 9, in an accident that occurred right before a test of the rocket's main engines, according to a Twitter post by William Harwood, a reporter with CBS news.

Secondary explosions could be seen on video of the launch pad posted to YouTube Thursday morning.
