I totally respect the 'not being addicted to a TV' and the commercial pop-culture that it represents.

BUT

I think it's difficult to argue that the internet is somehow better when it comes to getting information or news. I would say the internet is about the worst place one could ever go for factual, unbiased information. Even worse than CNN/Fox considering the complete and utter lack of ANY control or organization. There's a reason conspiracy theorists, extremists, fakes, scammers, etc. love it.

It's a trade-off: Mass/quick information with little to no reliability or oversight, to commercially/entertainment driven news and information.

I usually just watch the BBC news broadcasts - usually straight and to the point with no real attempt to make it 'shocking' and 'entertaining'. Just news.

What has happened in my life is a step back from the stranglehold the media has on one's life. Regardless of the Internet source, good, bad, or indifferent, I can choose to view any of it at my own pace, or none of it at my will. Disconnecting from the Cable TV broadcasts, and antennae local channels, I have noticed a marked difference in my world view.

But the news aspect is only about 1% of the total change. I rarely view any news, and it is not the bulk of the difference. The bulk of the difference is that I could care less about any of the programming (brainwashing) of the networks.

I do my own thing, and that is what is unique. I say it is also something that others will be doing more of in the future. In fact, I would even say this is what home entertainment will evolve to more and more in the next ten, twenty, thirty years.

It has very little to do with the news.

I am intelligent enough to discern between real news and hoaxes. One point there is the ability for some to "swallow" everything they read in their e-mail inboxes as "news"... sensational gunk that is sent out by malicious dum-dums who get their kicks out of stirring people up by making claims like the Congress doesn't pay in to social security, or that Mr. Rogers was a Navy Seal, etc.

www.snopes.com is a non-profit web page that has dedicated their efforts to refuting these Urban Legends. Most of them are pretty rediculous, but people get caught up in them everyday.

You can take my TV but never touch my stereo... I need music. To me a day without music is like a day without sunshine.

HMMM I need my tv so I can watch football games!! When I first started reading this thread I am thinking...geesh get a life!! Then I sit here and actually think about it, I don't really watch that much tv...but I don't sit here and waste much time on the computer either.
Honestly, I think thats a lot of peoples problem...to much time is wasted on the computer. I can not sit here and look at this screen that much nor do I really want to, so I think I will sit here and watch my tv at those certain times and then do what is needed to be done!!
To those who don't have a tv and like to live like Amish folks..hey I wish you luck flowerforyou

Not Amish at all.. calling me Amish would actually be a ignorant, derogatory statement because you can't grasp what I have achieved.

Amish people live outside of the realm of all contact with the modern world. How you can relate that to a highly advanced form of entertainment viewing is beyond me. Sounds more like your brain's way to stereotype an advanced and progressive person who has developed beyond you in this culture.

I bought a large screen last year in time for Super Bowl. I have watched it maybe a total of 5x since then and that was for movies. So if you got rid of my TV, I would be ok...now the computer that is another story.

As a matter of fact...

My computer is my stereo system, too... I have and advanced sound card, and I have ripped my entire CD collection to mp3 file format, add to that tons of mp3s I have down loaded off the Internet (about any style of music you can name)

I have roughly 30,000 mp3s on one of my hard drives... divide that by say 12 tracks per CD... roughly about 2,500 CDs worth of music...

Plus most of my cassettes from "back in the day" have been converted to mp3 format... no need for a CD player, turntable, cassette deck or any of that, either... the computer does it all... and it all exists on 3-1/2" wide hard drives

now, if everyone did away with Tv's and went to pc's...why aren't they less expensive? lmao

oh wait..that's right...Tv's would become less expensive, and pc's will go UP in price...lol

Actually, with HDTV and plasma technology, and a high quality HDMI connector plugged into a high-end video card in the PC, the resolution is actually much BETTER than most tube-style TV sets, and the screen size can be as big as your wallet will allow... I saw an incredible demonstration of a 50" plasma TV at BestBuy... the resolution was so good, it was like you were right there in the picture with the photography...

TVs are completely a thing of the past that are soon to be completely outdated by better and more advanced technology.

I can build my own PC... and I did... a dual-processor system, with 4 hard drives and up to 8GB of RAM... and this was a system I built 2 years ago... and paid all together $1,400...

Had I ordered this same exact configuration from DELL, it would have cost about $6,000...

It has 100 times the uses of an regular television set, I can service and upgrade it myself, and next year, the same parts I put in this machine will be dirt dog cheap... while at the store, the price of the TV will be the same, or exponentially greater.

No need for a TV... why spend all that money on a one-use item when you can get a computer to do the same thing, plus literally hundreds more tasks... ??????

Plus, the computer can be configured to have WAY better resolution... and besides, its just darned fun....

Hey, TelephoneMan!

Do you still use a rotary phone too??

I am kidding! laugh

I don't watch much tv either. I stream it online if I find a show I like. There are few, if any, commercials and it's all on demand. I agree. When you've been away from it for a while it's really hard to go back to watching some of that junk that they air.

HAHA !!!!

Actually I just gave up on my Vonage Internet-based phone. The technology for Internet-based phone just simply sucks today... Vonage is a huge rip-off... every two or three minutes, you have to reassure the party you are talking to that you are still there because every two or three minutes, Vonage cuts off and it sounds like (at there end) you have hung up...

Not nice for business calls...

Got me a really nice Panasonic cordless phone... love it to death...

However, with a microphone and a web cam, you can have a cool conversation with somebody using Yahoo Messenger over the Internet... long distance or otherwise... as long as the other party has Yahoo, etc...

That's like the **** Tracy picture phone watch... except the technology now exists...well, except for the watch... ha... probably could do something similar with a cell phone...

Yeah. Vonage sucks. In theory it's cool, but the service has a lot of room for improvement!

Yahoo, Skype, etc. are all great for making calls over the internet.

heh, as good as my monitor is...it's NOT as nice as my TV was. that might just be size, lol. i just can't type with a huge monitor...19 inches is pretty much my limit.
