Does this relationship really work?
Maybe. Depends on what kind of relationship works for you. If you are lonely, don't go out much, and you want that to change, want to go out, want to date, want organic growth to a relationship, want to feel close to someone, discover loves bloom in you, then it's not going to work. If you're really insecure, scared of any kind of change, have no problem spending a lot of time alone, most of your social interaction happens at a distance via internet and texts, want your own life and secrets you can have absolute control over and just kind of compartmentalize and parcel out to someone, do a lot of rationalizing like tell yourself you're in love and then keep throwing time and behavior at it so you can convince yourself it's real, then it might work. I mean what's the point of relationships to you? If other people are simply a means for your own emotional gratification, like a quick hit of crack or something, then distance can work. If the point of a relationship is to grow closer to someone and share all the good and bad things of your life, experience change together, learn, grow, and provide a sold foundation for natural emotions, then distance is a hindrance. Most of the naturally occurring emotional bonding in a relationship occurs in the first few months. Most of that is built on communication. Most communication isn't what comes out of your mouth, but your body language, tone of voice, facial expressions, indirect behavior you have no control over or even realize you're doing. Months spent online you force yourself to go through a stunted process, but what you bond with is the idea of the person you form in your own head that was influenced by your biased interpretation of black and white text. So...it depends on what kind of relationship you want. Remember those digital monster games that were popular? Where you had an electronic creature that you had to play with, feed, exercise, do stuff to, and they'd grow and make funny noises, and learn tricks and powers, and make you feel like you accomplished something? Relationships built long distance over the internet are like that. For most people they realize it's pointless and end up moving on, letting that computer creature die. Other people become the 40 year olds that still show up to pokemon conventions dressed as pikachu and feel proud about what they've done, and it's provided something to their life. |
