Students at Santa Monica College have taken tree-hugging to a whole new level by getting “married” to the ocean. They call themselves “EcoSexuals.”

The ceremony had all the elements one would expect at any beachfront wedding: rings (for the students, not the waves), vows, a wedding dress … and some of the students even went down to the water to “consummate” the union once it was declared official.

They haven’t forgotten the trees, though. One EcoSexual described—quite vividly—how she always makes certain to obtain consent from a tree before hugging it (in case you were wondering, trees communicate consent with “their spirit or energy” or something”).

Earlier this month, a professor at Santa Monica College led students in an ‘EcoSexual Sextravaganza’ in which participants ‘married the ocean.’

Amber Katherine, a philosophy professor who helped organize the May 14 event, explained toCampus Reform that the purpose of the “wedding” was to bring about a deeper love for the planet through “ecocentric passion and even lust.”

The ceremony began with Bruce Cartier, a former SMC student, proclaiming to those gathered at Santa Monica Beach that “today we stand upon this holy earth and in this sacred space to witness the rite of matrimony between the sea and us all.”

Next, leaders of the event distributed rings to the students, announcing “with this ring, I bestow upon the sea the treasures of my mind heart and hands—as well as my body and soul. With the power vested in us, we now pronounce you ‘married to the sea.’”

here's what "pissed off patriot mom" says on facebook: Just when you think you have heard it all ahahahha California never runs short of stupid. I suppose Governor Brown will support them and make sex with sea life legal. Remember, these are COLLEGE STUDENTS, not inmates from an asylum. How proud the parents must be. Employers take note when you see resumes from graduates of Santa Monica College.

Old hat called by a different name...

Back in the Last Century, circa 1978, we used to 'merge within the ocean' on a regular basis...

Except then, it was "Submarine Races" - where someone was sure to be torpedoed!

Ah, yes!

Children believing that they have invented something new.

Eh.
Better than fraternity hazing, overdosing on recreational drugs and/or alcohol, or date rape which seems to be common on college campuses.

Although, I really wish I could print stories like this, take it to the local IRS office, and have them refund me some of my tax money or allowed to choose to invest it in a different school.

Kind of like Scientology and their Billion Year Pledge you have to sign to be a part of their cult.
