Irate beaver 'takes man hostage'

A rogue beaver struck terror into the heart of a man making his way home late at night in the Latvian city of Daugavpils, according to a local newspaper report picked up by Latvian Public Broadcasting.

The man, identified only as Sergei, says the beaver ran out of some bushes and suddenly bit him. He fell over as he tried to fight the rodent off and was bitten again as he tried to get up.

In what USA Today describes as a "Kafkian nightmare," Sergei phoned police as the beaver "held him hostage" and refused to let him get up, only to have his plea for help allegedly dismissed as a prank call.

Sergei managed to persuade an initially disbelieving friend to come to his rescue, but the friend was pulled over by police for speeding. Cops—after breathalyzing the friend—accompanied him to the scene and discovered he had been telling the truth about the hostile beaver.

Animal welfare officers were called and the man's ordeal ended with him receiving 15 stitches, though the beaver is still at large. Latvia's TV.Net reports that authorities in Daugavpils are taking the incident seriously, though it is "quite difficult to choose the measures which should be taken" to prevent similar attacks by beavers, which can become increasingly aggressive when they seek out new homes in spring.

The beaver was in effect holding Sergei hostage.

The man was able to call rescue services using his cellphone. However, they thought it was a prank call and hung up on him.

From there, it gets crazier.

Diabolical beaver holds Daugavpils in its thrall

The beaver - a protected species in Latvia - is understood to have made good his escape and is still at liberty, like some furry Latgalian Jesse James.

The victim emerged from his ordeal alive but badly shaken and with 15 stitches in his leg.

Now On TOPIC

Beavers are very aggressive when they are protecting their young, homes etc..
I wouldn't want to tick one off. And they aren't as little as some believe...They can get pretty big.

One link lead to another, deeper & more detail to the story.
It is one of those things that is funny, AFTER the fact or if it happens to someone else.

A man in Latvia was taken hostage by an angry beaver during a late night stroll.

The incident occurred during the early hours of April 14 in the Latvian city of Daugavpils, as a man named Sergei returning home after partying with his friends was suddenly beset by a very aggressive beaver.

The beaver immediately latched onto Sergei's left leg and started gnawing on it, stubbornly resisting all attempts to drive him away. Eventually the angry creature managed to wrestle his victim to the ground and, peculiarly, immediately ceased his assault. Nevertheless, the beaver remained sitting next to his prone victim, resuming attacks each time the man attempted to get up, according to Delfi news portal.

While lying prone, Sergei managed to reach for his cellphone and dial the emergency services, but his call for help was dismissed as a prank, prompting the injured man to seek aid from his friend.

The traffic police officers who stopped Sergei's friend as he exceeded the speed limit while rushing to the rescue were also skeptical when the driver explained that he needs to save a man from a savage beaver, and even requested that he take an alcohol test. When it became clear that the man was sober, the puzzled policemen decided to accompany him during the scene of the carnage, where they called an ambulance for Sergei.

Fortunately, this story ended happily for all parties involved: Sergei was successfully treated for his injuries and didn't receive any lasting traumas while the beaver was apprehended and released back into the wild. But if you happen upon such a creature, keep in mind that the real animals are far more dangerous than their cartoonish counterparts, and often can be very aggressive when defending themselves or their territory.

This story is funny enough.

But, I'm not sure I'd wanna be the guy who has to
explain to his wife...

"Honey, I know you're not gonna believe this.
But the reason I'm late comin' home?
Yeah, I just mindin' my own business, when
I was jumped by a beaver."

I don't think this diabolical beaver is a natural born citizen.... Latvia (Latvija) is a Baltic state in Northern Europe. Beavers have been invading for at least a decade.

winking
