Found out yesterday that till well in the 1980s native American women were sterilized without their consent and without them knowing, when they went in for another procedure. Often when they were just some 15-17 yrs old ... So many Indian women could never bear children as they didn't tie their tubes, which could be restored, but their uterus was removed (hysterectomy). Barbaric, totally utterly unbelievable in what's supposed to be a 1st world country, and incredibly sad ... That sort of thing makes me understand why native Americans aren't particularly trusting of white Americans, and don't take to kindly to them. 
Forced sterilization of people of color is something I have recently learned about. Not just people of color, but also of those who were thought to be criminally insane. There is much research on the web! I will find a creditable source and post it. |

I like the series Longmire Does it depict the native american interaction correctly? I would say it only grazes the surface..,(and its not really a show about that anyway). Walt and Henry's relationship in the show would be an anomoly in real life IMHO.. What I remember learning is that hundreds of years ago before white man came to NA, there were many, many tribes (east coast) and they all fought each other, slowly killing each other off..so many tribe names are no longer. White man comes, takes over and we all know where that led.. I am OK with them standing up for their rights and our environment.. Funny isn't it, that if you look back at history, all mankind seems to have been doing is fight and kill each other. We judge the Indians for not living in peace together, and killing each other off anyways, but that's not different from what we ourselves did in Europe. Don't know if you know European history ... but there's the Celts, the Romans, the Goths, the Franks, the Anglos, the Saxons, the Vikings, the Normans etc And later on we had the Russians, the French, the Spanish, the Germans, the English (but we gave them a good beating at Chatham, destroying their fleet!!), Austrians and lord knows what else. The Vatican. Let's not forget the Vatican. I really love the series too! I do wonder how far fetched such a relationship between Walt & Henry is. All it requires is mutual respect and understanding and an open heart. Doesn't sound like a really big deal ... About time mankind can close such gaps! Quote from the movie Terminator Judgement day. I would say a lot on this mater but as I am native American CheroKee by the way it is better then what I grew up with I've been called red ****** and so on by people that don't even know me what I can tell you is I have not seen a movie or a tv program as of yet that will put the true facts out there for all to see

Things have changed so much in the last 50 years since I was born. I am basically a half breed. Yeppers I heard that a lot growing up...
I am basically half french and the other Apache.. Yet when I think about it down through time this has always been done treating the conquered as dirt etc.. Take a look at history as far back as it is recorded Things have changed a lot. So maybe someday we will have a united generation without one race thinking they are far more superior than another... Because honestly folks we all bleed red if we are cut... |
