Surveillance video shows alleged Brooklyn gang rape suspects
Four of five teenagers accused of raping an 18-year-old woman at a Brooklyn, New York playground were in custody late Sunday, as authorities defending their handling of the case. 

Police said two teenagers surrendered and two were apprehended. Charges were pending against a 14-year-old, 17-year-old and two 15-year-olds. A fifth suspect is still being sought.

Authorities said the woman was accosted just after 9 p.m. Thursday as she and her father walked inside Osborn Playground in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. Police said one of the five suspects pointed a gun at the father and told him to leave. Each man raped the woman, police said. The father returned with two police officers, but the attackers fled.

The woman was treated at Kings County Hospital and released.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement released Sunday that he was "disgusted and deeply saddened by the horrific attack... Every New Yorker in every neighborhood deserves to feel safe and protected, and we will not stop until the perpetrators of this disturbing attack are held accountable for their actions."

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams echoed the mayor's anger, but also questioned why police waited until Saturday night, 48 hours after the alleged crime, to alert the public by releasing surveillance video investigators said showed the men in a bodega before the alleged incident.

In response, NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis said the commanding officer of the precinct began contacting local community leaders about the alleged rape on Friday. The spokesman also insisted that there was no delay in the initial police response.

"A patrol car from the 73rd Precinct was approached on the street and told about the attack by the victim's father, who directed the officers to the scene," police spokesman Stephen Davis said.

"The police officers immediately responded and located the victim," Davis said. "The suspects had already fled."

As disgusting & enraging as (most) women find this.

People should not only know about it, they should realize,, chances are..it will get worst.

Some may even suggest to educate them in prison and treat them with kid gloves, the do gooders.

I'd say lock them up and throw the key away, bread and water and hard labour.

But doesn't show the actual rape.
Just the suspects in a store.
And one of the suspects was saying the sex was consensual.
Some witnesses believe the father was drunk.
Police said the girl was drunk.
She was also combative with police when they arrived.
I think she assaulted one.
The alleged rapists were not on the scene when the police arrived.
Two of the suspects turned themselves in, two of the suspects were arrested, there's one on the loose.


Police withhold information from the public all the time to help their investigations.
They have 4 of the suspects. The only reason to release the information they have is to identify and help apprehend the 5th.
But if you can find the guy from interrogating the 4, no reason to go to the media and ask for help.

Releasing information to the public before a trial tends to help the criminals, and can also lead to really bad things.
Remember the lacrosse team accused of rape in the rolling stone?
Or spike lee tweeting george zimmermans supposed address?
They went through all sorts of crap due to everyone needing to know now now now.

People should know what their public servants are doing.
There should be transparency in criminal investigations.
But IMO criminal investigations and trial is different than legislation, so shouldn't be constant, absolute, and immediate.


When people demand to know everything immediately, to have a working narrative that can constantly change as new information comes out, then "spin" can't be avoided.


Rapes occur in states with carry rights.
Arizona has extremely loose carry laws.
Rapes happen.
I don't know what would happen if there was some kind of mandatory carry law. Or mandatory stand your ground law.


None are over 18.
18 to buy a rifle, except in some states in private sales.
21 to buy a handgun, except for private sales, which are illegal to those under 18.
So no background check on any of them.
Either a parent gave it to them, or they acquired it illicitly.


Maybe.
I doubt we'll ever hear anything about it.
The perpetrators are all under 18.

What laws can be changed? Gun ownership is pretty much illegal in new york. handgun ownership by minors is illegal. Rape is illegal. Threatening someone with a gun is illegal. Drinking in public/open container is illegal.

What preexisting laws will be enforced? No drinking in public parks? So the father and daughter would not have been there in the first place?

Two of the suspects were turned in by their parents.

Travis Beckford, 17,
was arrested Tuesday morning, Robert Boyce, chief of detectives for the New York Police Department, told reporters.

"He is the fifth person that we have arrested in this case, and we believe he's the final person," Boyce said.

Beckford is expected to be charged as an adult, as is customary for 17-year-olds in New York.

Four other teens have been charged as adults, and their names have been released:

Denzel Murray, 14
Shaquell Cooper, 15
Ethan Phillip, 15
Onandi Brown, 17
Travis Beckford, 17

All have Brooklyn addresses.

They are charged with rape, committing a criminal sex act and sex abuse, police have said.
