Who's the dumb one? Obama reacts to Trump climate criticism

WASHINGTON

President Barack Obama defended his remarks about the threat posed by climate change, saying Republicans, including U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, were "the only people" disputing the gravity of the problem.

Obama has called climate change a great threat to future generations. At a news conference on Tuesday before leaving the U.N. climate summit in Paris, he likened global warming to the threat posed by terrorism and Islamic State and said both problems can be addressed by applying steady pressure and new ideas.

Republicans seized on his comments as understating the threat of terrorism. Trump, front-runner to be the Republican nominee in the 2016 presidential election, told MSNBC that Obama's comment was the "one of the dumbest statements I've ever heard in politics."

"Well, you know, Mr. Trump should run back a tape or quote on some of the stuff he's said," Obama retorted, during an interview with CBS "This Morning" that was broadcast on Friday.

"But, look, here's what we know: 99.5 percent of scientists in the world say this is a really urgent problem," he said. "Political parties around the world. The only people who are still disputing it are either some Republicans in Congress or - folks on the campaign trail.”

Obama was among more than 150 world leaders in Paris this week at the start of a U.N. conference that aims to reach an agreement to curb global warming.

On Tuesday, Obama said rising seas and warming climates could be drain on economic resources.

"This is an economic and security imperative that we have to tackle now," he said.

Who's the dumb one?

I don't think that should be the question. I want to know who is MORE deceptive?

In any event. I am sure that when Obama addressees the nation from the Oval Office, (tonight at 8pm, est... which he has not done since Iraq), that he will attempt to stress that his 'global initiatives' are just as important if not more important than Islamic terrorism.
Of course he may throw, 'homegrown & domestic & gun control in there too.... Which would be totally inappropriate but par for the course.

Islamic terrorism is a more immediate threat!
But obummer wouldn't admit that.......being one himself!!
And we can't deny climate change because then all those 'doomsaying' climate specialists would be out of a job!!

 And all those,
CONTROL THE MASSES Initiatives, by telling them it is for their own good & safety... would be in the toilet

Climate change has existed since the formation of the Earth. So of course the sciences support climate change..... just not that it's caused by humans!

They couldn't backup their "global warming" rhetoric to impose their carbon tax initiative and make Gore a billionaire instead of a laughing stock, so they changed it to "climate change" (a natural occurrence) so even if they were wrong (which they usually are) they were right.

You can't tax people if they don't believe (remember?.... "you can keep your Dr....PERIOD!"), so throw out a few billion tax payer dollars to fund some otherwise un(or under)employed scientists to "study it", and wah-lah! You have a consensus to sell the people you have already robbed in the 1st place!

The liberal media will do the rest using "their experts" to sell it and black-balling any who might oppose their theory/rhetoric/cause as "fringe" or no credit nay-sayers (despite the amount of alphabet characters after their names, or their years of study in that field).... as this piece does.....

Global Warming is real. The politics and rhetoric are baloney. The "carbon tax" won't fix anything and could actually make things worse being actually a "global welfare tax".

Global warming (the part caused by man) is caused by overpopulation. As every poor country gains wealth and technology, it's needs for energy increases for every citizen. The fastest growing populations have the fastest growing energy needs. India is rapidly becoming the biggest threat, along with China, to pumping the sky full of carbon. China has a serious head start at the moment.

The poor countries say that past burning of fossil fuels by the US is now a debt owed to the rest of the world. What is not said is that much of that fuel was burned to protect the World in world wars I and II and rebuild the world since.

If world birth control was the major focus until technology caught up with the energy needs and nuclear power (the kind that is NOT used to make bombs like Thorium) was implemented effectively, the future would look brighter.

And maybe a few nukes (the bomb type) used on the centers of Islamic terror might cool the planet down a bit also.

global warming-not real... carbon emissions- real... there's a big difference there, where the money is concerned...

It's really not about the CO2 in the atmosphere, it's about the corporate pollution, destroying our rain forests, polluting our rivers and streams, or draining them by "bottled water" companies..... which is rarely addressed (on any real scale) except to be blamed on "humans"

Why CO2 Is Good.... Benefits to Humans

Far from being a pollutant, rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations will never directly harm human health, but will indirectly benefit humans in a number of ways. Chief among these benefits is global food security. People must have sufficient food, simply to sustain themselves; and the rise in the atmosphere's CO2 concentration that has occurred since the inception of the Industrial Revolution (an increase of approximately 100 ppm) has done wonders for humanity in this regard. And, it will continue to work wonders in helping us meet the rising food consumption needs of a larger, future population.

Over 40% of our rain forests have been destroyed and water ways have been diverted for corporate profit causing drought to vast areas of land, killing vegetation, wildlife and humans or causing them to congest in the cities creating more hardship. poverty, and a need for more energy.

Our rain forests are the life blood of the Earth and they are being destroyed for profit!

I'm no tree-hugger, but how can you trust a govt to fix a problem they have caused or allowed to happen..... then blame on us?

i think you're right in the fact about the corporations spewing crap out without any regards about anything, that's why the governments have to get involved... but as far as CO2, it's not the problem, CO(carbon monoxide) is the main problem... carbon emissions mean all carbon gasses, most, unlike CO2 are lighter than the air, so stay in the atmosphere longer than CO2 does... CO2 usually stays closer to the surface, and doesn't float around as long as the other greenhouse gases

I think our host Sassyeuro is correct that asking who is the "dumb" one isn't a good question. Even without the inherent childish mistake that "dumb" means "can't speak," it's still not a good question to ask.

"Who is more deceptive" is a little better, but in this era of dueling liars and wild exaggerators, I'm not sure that works all that well either.

We have people who think they need to exaggerate the problems, in order to get people to pay proper attention to the concern.

We have people under-representing the facts, either because they hope to profit from continuing to ignore the problems, or simply because they are prejudiced against the people who brought the problems to our attention.

And when big time politicians get into the mix, vying for the highest office in the land, then there's no limit to how much complete balderdash is going to be self-righteously bandied about.

This little thread already has examples of such self-indulgent spewing.

The main thing that bothers me about all this "global warming" nonsense is that someone is going to try something that could be stupid in the long run... i was reading an article about things they are looking into trying, like putting glitter in the air to block some of the suns rays, which could be a worse thing than the so called global warming... we all live in this world, and i don't think any leaders of any country has any right to do anything that could harm the world as a whole...

The way I figure it, is that there are a lot of things we could do which would help, which we actually would want to do anyway. Like decreasing dependence on fossil fuels, so as to reduce our vulnerability to foreigners holding resources hostage, as well as reducing our own immediate pollution.

I wish the politics was less about one-up-man-ship, and was more about making a basic, logical response to the problems we can already see.

As long as corporatism (fascism) exists in America. the world basically, and the bankers pull the strings of all corporations and governments of the world, what we will get is propaganda to fuel the agenda, nothing close to a truth or a cure to what ails the world today.

That's like asking congress to vote themselves a wage and benefit cut along with term limits..... will never happen!

It's all about control, power and profits, and passifying, while deceiving, the dirty masses for whatever results best serves that end.

All the world's a stage......
