Seems it's ok for campus police to "shoot" people breaking into cars!

Even the general military guard can only fire in the case of capital crime like rape, murder, kidnap, or in self defense

Your cited source notes:
"The Sheriff's Office told WSPA the other suspect tried to escape in a car, and drove toward the officer, hitting the officer, who then shot back at the vehicle, killing the suspect."

What other source? It's not in the article you cite.

I read the cited link as the suspects fled on foot when confronted by the deputy....then got in a car and drove toward the deputy, subsequently hitting him and the deputy fired. Who knows....author needs to go back to journallism school.

Either way, Im not gonna get outraged by some low life breaking into OTHER peoples $hit and trying to steal said $hit. Play stupid azz games, win stupid azz prizes.

I couldn't agree more. Thieves and liars are the lowest form of scum.

My only point in this whole thing is how often we are hearing of such shootings, and killings, over shite that has no need to escalate to that level

A thief who puts someone's life in danger loses any right's. He has the right to be dead, good riddance.

It's sad you hold life so cheaply based solely on a media account.

Guess the 6th amendment doesn't hold much stock for you? We just shoot people now for something as minor as breaking into cars?

Which really came 1st, the chicken or the egg, the shots or a vehicle being driven while dodging bullets to avoid being shot? All we have to base that answer on is a cops statement and the media account.... and why we have laws and courts.

Breaking into someones home is one thing, a car another. Not like it was a car jacking!

All I want to know is what is the DIFFERENCE between a local cop & a campus cop in that community?

There are always differences in procedure & protocol.

For example: One of the main reasons rape is an epidemic at universities now, is a crime MUST go thru the campus police & the college itself. And THEY decide, NOT the victim if REAL police are to be brought in.
There were MANY articles in the 70's & 80's about police literally being turned again at the gates, because it was NOT their jurisdiction. And the colleges didn't want the bad press.
And they still don't.

'Yea..sure..we have come a long way baby '

Where are you coming from? The guy was caught breaking into a car, then he drove into the cop with a car! What is the cop supposed to do to enforce the law? Good for the cop, he did the right thing. One less scumbag on the street.

I would think as it is here in my state that any car being driven toward any person or officer would be considered a deadly weapon. Brandishing or threatening the safety of any person with a deadly weapon justifies the use of deadly force. Kind of hard to use less lethal protection in that situation, and I would say the officer what was necessary in that situation.

If no one noticed, the SC ruled on Wednesday that it's okay for cops to shoot if you're running. Yes, the SC actually made that ruling based on a case in (surprise surprise) Texas.

Solution: Don't run.

Every action has a reaction. The guy made a decision to drive at the cop. At that point, the car becomes a weapon. Thus the cop had the right to stop the threat.

I don't know if the cop shot to kill, but in my opinion he did what he should have done.

He stopped the threat. And unfortunately the guy died, brought on by the guys own actions.

Had he got away and killed some innocent person with that car as he was flying down the street, the question to the police would have been " why didn't you stop him when you had the chance"

I hate thieves. I deal with them every day. There is nothing worse then a lying thief.
