Well for SF there would be State and Federal tax. Sales tax on whatever you buy. Most apartments you would pay electric and phone. They usually cover the water and gas unless you have a really big apartment. You would be able to visit for up to 90 days at a time.

For visiting, all you need is a UK passport and a round trip ticket. For staying here for good, you would need a visa, such as a K1 fiance visa, or maybe a student visa, which would be good for the term of your studies. Also you could try to get a work visa through a company out in SF. They can sponsor you to come work for them for a specified period of time. If you want to know more, just send me an email.

Well, if I were you I would bring a whole bunch of money.
San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live.
People were paying more than $4,000.00 a month just for a studio apartment. Please check it out because that was 15 years ago. I am a native of California and I lived about an hour and a half south of the city and the high rents and costs of homes drove me out of the state. Good luck but be prepared for quite a shock.

With your job skills set I would recommend you have at least $50,000 in your pocket and a signed employment contract or stay home. Sounds harsh but it takes a bucket of money to live in California and having your own car is a MUST. It is a very tough place to fit in even if you love the climate and the "lifestyle". I have lived all over the USA and this is the toughest. If you can come into a dorm on a student visa I would recommend you do it because housing is a nightmare and your mistakes can haunt you here for a long time.

I lived in Glen Park a couple years back (it's a suburb in SF), and was able to land a two bedroom apartment for $1000. That's as cheap as it gets in SF, unless you're really lucky.

Have you tried Craigslist.org? For business related stuff, I've met some nice people through that website. And it's utilize by a lot of communities in the Bay Area.

Do you have any friends already living in SF or in a city nearby? Your best bet is to do what you're doing, going to the social websites and making contacts with people that live in/near SF. Once you meet someone reliable, you could visit for a week and see if SF is really for you.

Personally, I loved it there--there's something happening pretty much 24/7 and there's a ton of small friendly communities you can fall into, if you know where to look.

Good luck man. :)
