"" A woman who ran the entire London
Marathon without wearing a tampon has
described how she did so to show that the
“stigma of a woman’s period is irrelevant”.
Kiran Gandhi, a Harvard Business School
Graduate and professional drummer who
has played alongside M.I.A and Thievery
Corporation, wrote about the experience on
her website under the headline “Sisterhood,
blood and boobs at the London Marathon
2015”.
Gandhi ran the event for Breast Cancer Care
and, along with “two of the most important
women in my life”, collectively raised
$6,000 (£3,800) for charity.
“The marathon for me was about family
and feminism,” she said – the latter being
because she “ran the whole marathon with
period blood running down [her] legs”.
Gandhi explained that her period began the
night before the big race, but that she
decided she didn’t want to have to wear a
tampon while running 26.2 miles.
She wrote: “I thought, if there’s one person
society won’t f*** with, it’s a marathon
runner. If there’s one way to transcend
oppression, it’s to run a marathon in
whatever way you want.
“On the marathon course, sexism can be
beaten. Where the stigma of a woman’s
period is irrelevant, and we can re-write
the rules as we choose. Where a woman’s
comfort supersedes that of the observer.
“I ran with blood dripping down my legs for
sisters who don’t have access to tampons
and sisters who, despite cramping and pain,
hide it away and pretend like it doesn’t
exist. I ran to say, it does exist, and we
overcome it every day. The marathon was
radical and absurd and bloody in ways I
couldn’t have imagined until the day of the
race.”
The 26-year-old finished the race in four
hours, 49 minutes and 11 seconds, and told
Cosmopolitan what it felt like to finish the
race through the anxiety and pain of
cramps.
She said: “I felt kind of like, Yeah! F*** you!
I felt very empowered by that. I did.”"

I do think it was a "look at me" stunt. Everyone's an activist these days.
Dont get me wrong, running a marathon is something I couldnt do...hats off to her for that.
But I didnt realize there was stigma associated with periods. Theyve been occuring since the dawn of womankind and i dont think any adult, male or female, doubts that they happen lol

I believe the goal may have been achieved.
Some things and acts are just for everyone's
personal meditation and interpretation
to formulate their conclusions and points of view.
But she is definitely committed to convey a message
to minds capable of critical thinking.

and what would the Message be,pray tell, except Not to run a Marathon at that time of the Month?

It isn't like Women are shunned at their time of the month here in the west,so the Message to me is that she is a Show-off who could have expended the Energy it took to run that Marathon on a much more useful endeavor!bigsmile

I wonder if there was any vaginal chafing.

I mean people tape their nipples because their shirts can really start to get loose when they soak with sweat and start rubbing against the nipple.

So if her panties were all soaked and possibly getting loose due to movement it could have lead to fissure of the vag.

Other than that, I wonder if other marathon runners, or herself, started licking or drinking the blood if that would be considered blood doping and if they'd be disqualified.

Yeah, I'm betting her parents are soooo proud. Running and bleeding. Hmmm. Kinda mastered that at about 9 months learning to walk. Step, step, fall, *crunch*, get up, "waaahhh!" run to parent with a split lip, forehead, whatever. I didn't have the skills to do a marathon at that age though, but I bled like a champion. By the age of 6 I was a member of the 300 stitch club. Lifetime total is 500+. I'm lookin' for a frickin' trophy people.

I will admit though, she did raise my awareness of third world feminine product shortages. Silly me. I assume through the thousands of years of recorded history, women had found ways to cope before the Kotex company simply sprang into existence, and solved the problem. I understand though Kotex has edited a recent commercial to remove running as something women can do on their periods. Unfortunately ladies all that's left is yoga, horseback riding, bike riding, beach volleyball, and posing in bikinis with your friends. Good luck with that!

You gotta admit, she's gonna be a great one to introduce the family. You know how some women maybe have a funny laugh, or they are terminally perky, or maybe have noticeably bad driving skills? How many women have you brought home and introduced to the family as a 'public bleeder'?

Although the jokes on her. Go ahead, try to turn down your boyfriend for sex! Ha! "Oh I'm sorry Pumpkin, you have a headache? Roll the tape boys! HOURS of bleeding and cramping! I just want like 5-10 minutes!" he says. Throw those legs up in the air Snowflake.

In the end though running and bleeding? Not a challenge. 18 bean burritos and 6 Ex-Lax? There ya go Princess, set the bar high for next year.....

Kind of reminds me of another incident that happened in England, the famous L7 bloody tampon incident when the lead singer of the popular band L7 pulled out her own tampon and threw it into the crowd. In case you never heard of it, VH1 got the scoop with commentary by Sebastian Bach and some funny a$$ comedians. bigsmile
