Adolf Hitler

Hitler's public relationship to religion has been characterized as one of opportunistic pragmatism.[10] His regime did not publicly advocate for state atheism, but it did seek to reduce the influence of Christianity on society. Hitler himself was reluctant to make public attacks on the Church for political reasons, despite the urgings of Nazis like Bormann. Although he was skeptical of religion,[11][12] he did not present himself to the public as an atheist, and spoke of belief in an "almighty creator".[13][14] In private, he could be ambiguous.[15][16] Evans wrote that Hitler repeatedly stated that Nazism was a secular ideology founded on science, which in the long run could not 'co-exist with religion'.


Benito Mussolini

Mussolini'�s father was an atheist, freethinker and anti-Papal and his mother a devout Catholic.1 But Benito followed more in the footsteps of his father and when he did accompany his mother to church, he was a malcontent, often getting himself into trouble. He did attend Catholic boarding school from which he was expelled.2

Before becoming the leader of Italy, he was outwardly critical of Catholicism and a vocal atheist,3 challenging riveted crowds to prove him wrong by asking their God to strike him down and saying things like:
"The history of saints is mainly the history of insane people."4

However, once Mussolini took power, he realized that the Catholic Church was not only a force to be reckoned with in his own country, it had influence and reach all over the world. Thus, he decided to work with the Vatican rather than oppose it.

So there you have it, an atheist with a Catholic mask.


Josef Stalin

Raised in the Georgian Orthodox faith, Stalin became an atheist. His government promoted atheism through special atheistic education in schools, anti-religious propaganda, the anti-religious work of public institutions (Society of the Godless), discriminatory laws, and a terror campaign against religious believers. By the late 1930s, it had become dangerous to be publicly associated with religion.[100]

Stalin once said:
"You know, they are fooling us, there is no God! all this talk about God is sheer nonsense."5

During the Second World War, Stalin reopened the churches. One reason could have been to motivate the majority of the population who had Christian beliefs. The reasoning behind this is that by changing the official policy of the party and the state towards religion, the Church and its clergymen could be at his disposal in mobilizing the war effort.
