Depends if the dumping of the girl is seen as changing what is, or going back to what was.

If the "gal" is part of his normal, and it changes, it's going to hurt no matter what.

If the "gal" is not part of his normal, something new in his life, starting to change it, and getting rid of her relieves pressure so he just goes back to his normal, then it's not going to hurt or at least nowhere near as much.
Focusing on what she did "wrong" could be just a mechanism to use in order to get him back to normal faster.
