I so hate this Yulin festival (or shall I call "barbaric") practice in China.. this "mal"practice started 2010 for what I've read.. and for this year, it happened yesterday, killing around more than 2,000 dogs and some were cats even.. so inhuman.. it really has a big effect on me since I love dogs so much, I currently have one.. it's really heartbreaking.. they even sell their own dogs for a higher price - what kind of human are they??

Check out this thtead.. in Current events "Chinese woman pays to rescue 100 dogs from meat festival ".

Then I Googled the images myself. I don't think you want to look. I felt sick, for 90 minutes.
And much as I love dogs, it does seem barbaric. But in fairness, it has always been & it is an ancient culture.

In my country, there are a few states that dogs are legally " livestock ", not pets. And this is disputed as well.
The life and breeding practices are cruel, imo.. You may not want to see any of that either.

Thanks Sassy! yup I read about it too.. so heroic what she's doing (the Chinese woman) and risking her life.. I've been following Duo Duo Animal Welfare Program's (DDAWP) update on this.. My hats off to their people for their worthy struggle.. Yes it's so disheartening that other countries (not just China) treat dogs as "livestock" where the rest of us regard them as family members

I hear dog is good. I would try it skewered with some peppers and tomatoes.
Some people say cats taste like rabbit. I'd be interested in testing that.
I've had snake soup and turtle soup. That was yummy.
I grilled a praying mantis once... not bad. Even made worm jelly once but it didn't come out right.
I want to see what chimp brain tastes like, too. Must be wild to eat brains right out of a monkey's head.laugh
In fact I'd try lots of animals from lion and elephant to gazelle and crocodiles... I just won't eat Human being because that is not the moral thing to do.

Worried about treating a bunch of dogs humainly while innocent humans are being blown to bits every day. grumble That's such BS.

Rooster 35,
You do know your in the PETS & Animals forum right?. And the OP made this thread, appalled at the senseless slaughter of animals, that most humans consider as pets.?
And that I posted, it doesn't matter to me if it is ancient culture, it made me physically sick for 90 minutes.?

I don't find your attempt at sadistic shock humor, funny at all, or appropriate for this thread.
If you truly believe ANY living creature is fit for human consumption * including others humans what * . and/ or a delicacy.... you could of made another thread.
Or a thread defending China , or any country & it's traditional food.
But instead choose sadism & insulted us that we should be concerned with things YOU are concerned with, & not post about human companions.
* Who are also police dogs, assistance dogs, therapy dogs, cadaver dogs, guard dogs, seizure dogs.. etc.*

That is NOT opinion, that is just cruel.

I understand. Sorry.
And for the record, I don't advocate eating Humans. I hope that's clear in my OP.
I wouldn't even think about eating a pet, although people have snakes and I did eat snake soup but is that bad because I ate a "pet" or because people have animals that others eat?
My mom had a chicken for pet when she was a little girl. Her mom cooked it and the family ate it (my mom did not). Was that bad of my grandma to cook my mom's pet?
I love animals. Some I eat regularly and others I only caress.

As far as that Dog festival in China, I would like to hear the same outcry at Thanksgiving when millions of innocent turkeys get slaughtered. And yes, I'm sure someone has a turkey for a pet somewhere on our planet.

Well, I am sure their are many a veggie or gooble gooble lovers out there now plotting solidarity. That would like to haul us away in silver bracelets. slaphead
* But turkeys are hardly intelligent creatures with a pack mentality who want to serve alphas - canine or human, that can also be house trained or trained at all *

Mr Rooster I know where you're coming from, it's as if you're saying "well, it's the survival of the fittest - who cares?"
You know our concern here is against cruelty and yet your first line says it all - I don't think you ever had a pet in your life that you have cared about, dogs especially.. only then you would understand what Sassy and I feel and are saying here.. The issue is not about who's eaten what.. we're trying to correct a culture where profit rules thru hideous and savage trade rather than animal care and healthy sanitation for the community just to celebrate an old practice or shall I say "malpractice" any pets you've nurtured but you seen being tortured is just horrible..I hope when you watched a footage from Yulin you can look straight in each dogs' eyes..we're trying to focus on how to attack the root of the dog meat trade, not only in China but other countries as well. You said it yourself, your Mom's chicken was cooked by your grandma but your mother didn't eat it.. and I think I don't have to ask you why.

Yeah whoa I couldn't possibly understand.
And if I can't understand what it is to have pet then what makes you think those people are going to understand about not eating them?

yeah that's a good point.. that is why --I would like to share with you the update posted by a concerned organization like DDAWP: "our main focus has been and will continue to focus on stopping the illegal theft and transport of dogs, reaching out to local communities and visiting local schools to encourage compassion for animals, advocating for animal protection laws and stricter enforcement of existing laws, and supporting animal shelters and sanctuaries." In essence, well it's a long shot maybe - but who knows? those people can be educated - it takes time but we can make a difference.. at this time, lawyers and policy makers are needed to propel forward animal protection laws.

Well, I hope they stop eating the poor doggies too.

I'd like to also see an end to the shameless use of dolphins by the military but I'm not holding my breath.
