You hear of people making it big in dream careers from 8 to 80. What would you risk to chase a dream job? If you have did it pan out?

I risked maybe having a family because I worked so much and moved to different states saving up for my own Bar and grill but now that I can afford it, I retired from the restaurant Biz because it burned me out.

I don't know.
Any dream job I ever chased it never seemed like I was risking anything. I was just doing what I thought I had to do in order to get things done. It never felt like risks, just costs.


Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Sometimes yes, and then it turned to no due to the economy or changing technology or something.

But I've never had a static dream job though like carpenter, or ceo of american express, where I'd get it and just stick to doing that one thing forever and ever.

They've always been jobs I've pursued because of the experience, people, knowledge, or culture.
Jobs offer a greater educational return than going to school after a certain point.

I think you are very right about learning by OJT.

Sometimes you really understand things better that you learn by trial and error.

A couple of times I just went into the store and watched people doing the job. If you are lucky enough to have someone allow you to job shadow or apprentice you can learn a lot pretty fast.

I really had to sometimes prove I could do the job before I could get and employer to hire me. Thankfully there are less pink collar only jobs and fewer glass ceilings.

A lot of service jobs do that . Hard to get people that want to work so you end up doing way more than you think.

I had my children at a young age. I devoted my time with them now they have left home This is my time for a career, travel and do what I should have done younger. I'm glad I did have them younger No regrets

My dream job of being a "kept man" is eluding me!

I am not feeling "called" to any trade or profession. My goal is to not work while maintaining an income sufficient to cover my necessary expenses. My wants are few, so a modest amount will do.

What do you enjoy doing like a hobby and start from there.

Stayed home with my boys and returned to college two years ago during the divorce
Starting grad classes in fall so not there quite yet. I alwayd thought I would teach and was halfway thru.an.elem ed degree when I changed direction.

went thru some circumstances in my life and with oldest son as teenager that really made me think I could do more to help these kids as their counselor than as their teacher so that is what I hope to do

Failure... I risked that many time and in fact at times I did fail. But in my opinion if you don't know failure.. you can never truly succeed.

Did it pan out....for me.. yes it did

I don't think I ever went looking for a dream career in the career as I call it chose me.
I have loved it
I have hated it.
I also always knew it was the perfect fit for me.

So I don't think I really risked anything in achieving it today and now at the end of it I feel that I made some great impact and some pretty crappy impacts.

Panning out yes it panned out for me, through the last almost 30 years I have learned a lot about who and what I am with my chosen career path..

Sold my 40 acre farm and contents, packed pics, keepsakes, books in a little U-haul trailer, hooked it up to my little RX 7 and moved to the big city to find my dream job...YES, it paid off in spades....
