Why does it take so long before I can read a message I've been notified that I received?

Why does it as someone has messaged you in the contact information under the profile but there was no message received from them.

Welcome, susieq53. The message may have been purged from the system because the member was abusing it. Please mail me (do not post here) the user name so that I can check on it, if you'd like.
