Well, not bands but there are some outrageously talented solo guitar players I can point you to (all of these can be found on YouTube):

Igor Presnyakov...Astonishing interpretations of a wide range of music

Jess (sometimes she goes by Jezzie) Lewis...jaw-dropping, simply divine jazz guitarist and she's just a baby. Her 1st few vids she was only 16. Pay attention to her right hand. She plays amazingly intricate stuff with outrageously economical string picking.

Ana Vidovic...the most technically flawless classical player I've ever heard. (and she's gorgeous!)

Kelly Valleau...another player that interprets a wide variety of music. His renditions of Metallica songs played finger-style acoustic are impressive as h...well, just watch and listen to him.

Andy McKee...his combinations of acoustic fingerstyle mixed with percussive accompaniment and his innovative left hand playing will cause you to rethink the possibilities of guitar.

There are many more eye-opening folks like these...check out the artists @ Candyrat Records and JamTrack Central. (All of the above guitarists and LOTS more virtuoso performances can be found on one or the other except for Presnyakov--he's got a channel of his own.)

I miss VintagenNerdy. She watched some of the same messed up horror movies as me.

Jobs for a cowboy, Battlecross, Black Dahlia Murders, Motionless in white, these are bands I've never heard off seen a CD in HMV and thought, this looks interesting and bought them. So far my instincts have been right!
