don't park it in the lake oor use the garden hose to wash out the inside and you'll be fine:tongue:

rust proofing is a good idea on new cars but not so good on used cars. if you have snow and such the the best preventative is regular trips to the carwash year round. pay up enough to get the under car wash but don't use their wax treatments

yes i have found the toyotas mostly to be a little easier to work on than the hondas. hence the order of my list. but both fit in that class nicely. parts are readily available and they very durable

average milegae on those cars that come into my shop is well over 200,000 miles.

the only thing i would not recomend is buying a hybrid. they don't get enough better fuel economy to offset their high price tag.

we figured that out with one of my customers that bought a civic hyrid. at our fuel prices he needs to drive 300,00 miles to make up for the price increase

i dont really feel that hybrids are all that practical... other than being too expensive...
our concern is not necessarily mileage... more of fuel efficiency... the one i got has been reputed to be a gas guzzler... 2.0 engine..suppose to be about 7-8km/l city driving and 10-11km/l highway driving... but it does have another button for econo-gas mode... the agent wasnt really able to explain how it works to me that well...

i was reffering to economy
when we did the math the civcwas rated 40 miles per gallon
and the hybrid at 50 mpg so miles driven to recover price tag in fuel savings was 300k

as for econo button... when you push that button the computer changes things like timing to make it more fuel efficient the down side is less power when accelerating and such

When I went car shopping, the two favorites were the Toyota Matrix and the Honda CRV. I loved the style of the CRV that year; however, with a price tag of $9,000 more than the Matrix, I thought the Toyota would be the best choice for me. At resale time, if that day ever comes, I know I'll come out ahead anyway than if I had bought any other car in my price range!

So that means its better to have that function on during traffic or slow drives..or at cruising speeds...right?.. And turned off during drag races... Lol..

Yup.. Resale price is important... Honda supposedly have the best resale prices of all the Japanese models... The engine is reputed to be the best... And the brand quality is suppose to be the Mercedes of Asia... Lol..

good input, eric and missy... ..makes me happy with my choicetongue2

the car models ive seen now has several added features that im not used to... the keyless engine start for instance... it feels weird coz partly, i wouldnt know where to put the key anymore... lol... then there's even this one model with a built-in keypad for the bluetooth function... seems strange... lol...

hey eric, have you handled cars with all these built in electronic stuff?... seems like it would be more prone to maintenance problems, in my opinion...
Nearly two years for me and I still occasionally reach down to pull the keys out...hahaha...
love the bluetooth and auto lights and wipers...

hey Jaan waving

i like Lexus models myself...wouldn't mind owning one eventually..sigh*....very sleek and classy design... i think i read somewhere that it is Toyota's high end division... probably why the resale is much better
as far as VW is concerned, i never really liked the beetle, not even the original version...when the new model came out, i thought it was cute at first, but the novelty wears off...

regarding gas vs diesel engine, i was thinking more along the lines of long term maintenance... ive been hearing conflicting experiences... diesel here is much cheaper, about 30% less than the cost of gas, no difference in taxes. but diesel engine version of the same model is a bit pricier... i dont know if it is because of the mechanical parts or if its because of environmental regulations... because i know that the diesel engine, per se, sold separately from the car, is more expensive than gas engine...but a diesel model car sold second hand is cheaper than if it were gas...
like this ^^^ im a bit confused as to the differences....is this the same elsewhere? or am i just really confused about my information?...what
..
what do you mean about gas being riskier?
from i i know, diesel engines tend need more attention..like some warm up time first before driving it around.. and something about certain parts under the hood needing to be cleaned regularly...otherwise, it could overheat or have residue. i have not heard the same from gas engines...

i drove a refurbished car once... we're left hand drive here, and theres this place where they import and convert previously owned right hand cars and sold on bidding... there were concerns along the lines of gear shifting and air-conditioning..but we got it fixed ...it was a manual transmission, so good for learners like me during the time ...lol...

car insurance here isnt as stringent. so no worries. i could be wrong, but i know that in the states, its a one car one driver policy... and every accident ups the premium...

what do you mean by CLASSIC models?

I have a toyota camry. Runs beautifully. Good size not too small not too big. Easy on the gas.
I think a car needs to go with your wardrobe. Choose a color that goes with what you wear. Sometimes its like your hand bag. My thoughts lol

yes a car is an accessory, as well as a necessity... speaks about a persons sense of style, and level of practicality..

after many years of fixing most anything that gets dragged into my shop. you are already in the right place tilly:smile:

my top 4 reccomendations to my customers are

toyota camry
honda accord
toyota corrola
honda civic

toyota and honda seem to be the best made and the best planned for maintainence which makes them less expensive to own.

after that lowest miles and best over all condition for the best price is the target.

too bad gearhead doesn't post here anymore

the cars i work on the most are the ones that are not maintained regularly. oil changes, tire rotations, air filters, fuel filters, tune-ups all cost money, but not as much as replacing major components or the entire vehicle

personally, i like to build my own. i do have a fondness for chevrolet, but i have owned a honda civic for many years. even when you look at two wheels, those "rice burners" are very low maintenance

i guarantee i guarantee that if you stop by your local service station you will find a mechanic ready to talk shop with you. they may not have anything nice to say about car designers or engineers, but they love that car talk. especially with someone who is easy on the eye

(bulldog double guarantee - patent pending)

this ^^ is one guarantee that might work better in your locality

but on a side note... i am interested in finding out comparisons on car designs and manufacturers too... i've read some consumer reports on car comparisons and found some interesting tidbits on what car enthusiasts think about one model vs another of the same class...
