Yes, Pansy..... divorce is still frowned upon, and I was one who kept up appearances for years...more for the sake of my children, then for the family though. But it is fast getting acceptance in the society, and family members are coming out in support of a family member who is not happy in a marriage for certain reasons not of their doing.

Sad to say, in some countries (not going to mention which), 'honor killing' of a family member is still known to be happening.... due to divorce, cheating by a spouse (normally woman) and even speaking out.

To break away from the norm, I guess it all boils down to where you are at, and the people in your current life & surrounding. It helps to really 'break away' by 'leaving the nest' and venturing out there somewhere .... be in the right environment to find your own path and footing. To be somewhere away where you can learn and be able to do what you want or speak out without worrying about being chastised by family/clan/community.

that is true. sometimes, it not only affects personal relationships.. it can also affect business dealings.. if you have the right family name, people will let you get away with things even if youre doing something wrong, but if your family has a bad rep, or have themselves, labeled you in a bad light, people are less inclined to get into business with you, just for that reason, even if you are doing the right thing...

some societies frown upon family members leaving the nest, especially if you're a single woman...some have the idea like you have a promiscuous lifestyle, that is why you want to live apart from family... and sometimes it is seen as the only reason for a daughter to leave the nest is when she is supposed to get married already... so it can get hard to break away from such ideals...

regarding divorce... i know someone who was being manipulated by their own mother to remain together... just so as she (the mother) can 'save face'... the situation is pretty cruel...and sad...

Once my folks are no longer around, I'm going to get a job as a stripper. Some of them make thousands of dollars a night! Play my cards right, I can finally buy my house!! The 'rents can be real downers though, keeping me from my dreams so we can keep up appearances.

I feel that my family has held me back in life, 100% I agree we are a product of where we come from. If they are not controlling and they support us then we have a better chance to live life to the fullest, according to our own nature. That's how I will raise my daughter, with possibilities. I'm giving her 3 citizenships, 3 countries, 3 languages. I want to give her what I can. Not material things, things of real value.
