A wise man once told me
That in order to discover your true self
One must first be stripped of everything
Held as true, infallible and dear

For how can one truly come to full knowledge
Of the breadth and depth of one's innermost self
When the only aspect known to one
Is a life one has always lived

What is a life without the search
For a truth to hold on to
Or a faith to move mountains
Or a love without bounds

What is truth
If not a knowing of the ages
Or a wisdom of life and death
And a beacon that shines in the darkness

What is faith
If not a hope and a belief
That all will be right again
Though time leaving scars heals wounds

What is love
That we should look upon it with one intent
That it makes us seek heaven and hell
With the very impatience that destroys it

What is life
But a chance given
If only we would recognize it
To find ourselves united to the one who gave it

What is death
That we should mock and fear the same
If not a limitation of our immortality
And a judgement with no jury

Will heaven and hell
Remain as a prize or a punishment
Or just a figment
And remnant of our half full logic

Who is the Devil
If not a confounder and a tease
Thought mighty and proud
Yet only a prisoner of his own desires

Who is God
My beginning and my end
That He should lead me
If only I let Him

What are choices
The easy or the right one
We make with none exempted from
Desire conscience want or need

Will mistakes
Remain as a millstone on ones neck
Or a brick wall to crash into
Or a release from wrong impressions

Does forgiveness
Walk a two way street
To bring tears to the giver
Or the given

Who am I
In my high minded vanities
I left a life I once knew
Only time will tell.
