The thing is...as soon as you collect a fee for your work you are a professional and charging a ridiculously low fee undermines your whole profession...

A friend of mine is a photographer...she calls herself a hobbyist...however, she advertises and has booked (and done) several weddings along with portfolio pics and family photos...She is complaining because other professionals are answering her ads complaining of her low fees... I think they have a point...

I agree...they have a point...because she puts out ads....seems as she is not doing it only for family and friends.
On the other hand...and that's why I thought of the above...if she is just starting she can maybe call herself a "student" and just ask for a fee to support the costs.

She has been doing it for awhile...has expensive professional equipment...says she is just doing it for people who can't afford high photographer fees for those special occasions... She could go by word of mouth and by donation then...but there is definitely a desire to make a living through this...just doesn't call it that.

Now THAT is actually a great idea ! If she REALLY wants to help people that can't afford it she should go for a non for profit structure and then get funding.

Funny, it's all about defining what you REALLY want to do...and clarifying your own motivations.
