But not football Hi Franky I don't think we will ever get through to them, me thinks you are wasting your time. Not sure whether England should be just scraping past Estonia, though I was glad Jags scored the other night. My brother is a blade so he is pleased he has made it in the England squad. As for Donny another management change is imminent me thinks!! By the way I tipped Martinez to be a top manager years ago when he was a pundit on La-Liga, just hope he never goes too Man U though!! |

"National Football League." That's what it's called. The fans didn't name it that; the team owners got together and decided it, decades ago. If we're going to talk about one of the teams that plays within it, we're probably going to call it "football". We could call it "National", but then people might think we're trying to take over their country. "League" could be used, but then everyone would wonder why we're so excited about the boys in the blue-and-silver bowling shirts. So, we call it "football". If there's no soccer team called the "Dallas Cowboys", it probably removes any confusion right at the get-go. |

george halas, knute rockne, red grange, bronco nagursky, vince lombardi tom landry and don shula all called it football......thats good enough for me....what are we supposed to call it ....kickball ???

Nahhhh...there's already a sport called "kickball", played on elementary school playgrounds, everywhere.
We wouldn't want upset a bunch of crazed Brownies and Boy Scouts by taking over their turf, yanno? |

Here we go again.
Being that this website is an international website that caters to an international audience, and ... ... being that, to the vast majority of the nations on planet Earth, the game of football is represented by the following image: ... if you want to specifically talk about the American version of football on this website, then you ought to say "American football" instead of just "football". |

Nahhhhh...the American Football League went defunct in 1970, when the two leagues merged. Given that this IS an international site and the teams being discussed were the Green Bay Packers and the Miami Dolphins, who are part of the National Football League, if anyone got confused as to which type of "football" was being discussed, they probably aren't that much of a soccer fan to begin with to warrant being incensed and/or offended by its use. Besides, as we all know while playing on online discussion boards, if one doesn't like the topic being discussed, one can simply elect to NOT participate in it...if it isn't one's cup of "football" tea. Contact Roger Goodell, the Commissioner of the National Football League, if you don't like the name under which they conduct their business. Oh, and be sure to contact Commissioner Jerry Kurz, of the Arena Football League, too. Complaining to the fans about what THEY'VE elected to call their business is fruitless, at best. |

Yes the original quote was about "American football" but the next quote was that its not football as we know it. That was the next debate but you choose to say if you don't like it don't join the debate. Once and for all your "football" is rugby with pads on and football is what you and your cpmpatriots call soccer. That is not just one's opinion that is the rest of the worlds opinion give or take few other countries. I thank you!! |

Some call it 'kick ball', I called it 'fooseball'...lol! |

The title of this thread is Football, not American Football.
So, from a global perspective, the title is misleading, because to most nations, the game of football is played with a ball that is totally round. |

So, from a global perspective, the title is misleading, because to most nations, the game of football is played with a ball that is totally round. I've forwarded your concerns on to Roger Goodell and Jerry Kurz for you. I also contacted Sepp Blatter and asked him to send every single soccer fan a list of the teams who DO play within FIFA, so no one will ever be confused, again. You're welcome. |

Ethnocentrism isn't pretty, not even when it involves a sport. One can label it anything one wants, including using a complete misnomer simply to make a molehill appear more *like* a mountain, but it doesn't change the fact that the fans had nothing to do with the naming of the business known as the National Football League. |

the proper term, for what i call soccer is...." Association Football " ...if and when soccer fans start using the correct term for their sport, then i will gladly use the correct term for what i call football as...." American Football "
