From Politico: Senate advances constitutional amendment
Several Senate Republicans joined Democrats on Monday to advance a constitutional amendment that would give Congress and the states greater power to regulate campaign finance. The bill calling for a constitutional amendment was proposed by Senate Democrats. The vote in favor of advancing the bill was 79-18. You would think that Senate Democrats would be happy that some Republicans voted with them to advance a bill proposed by Democrats. Well, if you thought that, then you would be wrong. The legislation needed 60 votes to advance and Democrats took a cynical view of the 79-18 tally. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said the GOP's tactic was simply to "stall" because it would eat up limited floor time that Democrats are eyeing for votes aimed at encouraging gender pay equity and raising the minimum wage. Yep, the Republicans gave the Democrats what the latter asked for, and Harry Reid is complaining about it. James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal states, "So let's see if we have this straight: Reid is unhappy that the Republicans are wasting the Senate's time by not blocking a measure that has no chance of passing anyway? If so, he should be mad at himself for introducing it in the first place." |

It's like the latest gun control bill put forth. It didn't change a single thing except to word things differently than other bills already in place. It was done so Dem Senators in severely vulnerable states could say they supported a pro-gun bill prior to the coming elections. |

Democrats were also wanting to say that Republicans obstructed a bill proposed by Democrats ... except that Republicans didn't. |

Senate Republicans on Thursday blocked a constitutional amendment meant to reverse two recent Supreme Court decisions on campaign spending. Senate Democrats needed 60 votes to end debate on the measure, but fell short in the 54-42 party-line vote. If Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) hadn't introduced the proposed amendment in the first place, then the U.S. Senate could have used its time to talk about other things. |
