As long as I can move around, I'm fine. Elevators don't bother me. But if I can't move........

honestly, i was surprised by this. the rangers and all warn you before going in

i've had two very bad experiences as a child...both left me claustrophobic.
when i was five, my mother's boyfriend (sister's father) suggested that he and i play hide-n-seek in the alley (we lived in van nuys) behind our apartments. several hours later...the police found me stuffed in an abandoned refrigerator. when i was about ten, a crazy neighbor teenager decided to chase me into one of the drainage tunnels that go underneath streets...i was very small and climbed in to get away from him. he then threw rocks at me until i was unconscious and rocked up both ends of the street, preventing an easy out. (as an adult, this gentleman was imprisoned for the rape and murder of a four-year-old child.) it doesn't translate as a "fear" for me...but i can't breathe nor stay still when i feel trapped. logically, i know that i am fine...i'm not worried about my health...but i still can't breathe. it matters whether it's a close space in which i put myself, or one of another's doing...i can choose to close myself in a closet and lock the door, and i'm fine. if someone ELSE closes that door...it's a whole nother story. |

i had similar types of instances although not as severe. ie adults locking me in inappropriate places.

my grandfather locked me in a cllar when i was five while my mother screamed and hollerd and fought to get me out.My offense?running a stick along a brick wall.
We were staying with my grandparents as my Dad was in Vietnam. My mom had a nervous breakdown my grandmother was so mean to us. Though my mother and dad went on to forgive them and care for them in their later years, the whole experience has left me scarred with claustrophobia, anxiety and panic attacks. |
