Crucial has an auto scan that will scan your system and tell you what memory will fit best for your pc and how much it will cost.

Hope that help's you out.

you first need to know the model (sometimes referred to as the series number) of your dell, not just the specs..

then i recommend get any new memory from newegg
here is a link to finding the kind of mem you need.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductConfigurator.aspx?plf=10&category=17&name=Memory%2DConfigurator

just put in dell as the make, then select the model and it will recommend the correct style of ram... probably ddr2

also i recommend the brands Crucial, Corsair, and OCZ.

Keep in mind that while your computer can have up to 2 gigs, that doesn't mean you can still use any of your 512 megs. You might have 256 megs x 2 in there, which means you would probably want to just grab two 1 gig sticks and throw away your existing RAM.
