I went out with a girl whose father was gay. It did "effect" her but there was a lot more to it than that and I've known other people that were messed up because they didn't have a stable family life, or they felt abandoned by a parent. Probably with gay people being more comfortable about coming out these days (in this country at least) that's going to happen less and there are ways that gays and lesbians can have families without having to live a lie. People use an unstable family life as an excuse to go off the rails. They would use any other excuse if they had a stable family. I used to know people in school from one parent family's and they're going on to be Doctors and all kinds of professionals. Yeah and that girl that I went out with wanted to be a nurse. She wasn't just using her upbringing as an excuse for going off the rails. She was actually diagnosed with having a personality disorder. I said that there was more too it than just her father being gay but people that have been abused or abandoned do often have serious issues that effect their interpersonal relationships. You've seen them on here talking about it. Another girlfriend that I had was abandoned by her father when she was very young and I still don't know why she had issues if it wasn't just that. All that I know is that she seemed to get a lot of benefit from doing counceling. All that I'm saying is that upbringing does impact on the development of a child. Maybe they can overcome it but it's not just a simple matter of wanting to and not using it as an excuse. If you had known that girl that I went out with and had seen how troubled that she was you wouldn't say something as glib as that. |

Children of Parents in Same-Sex Relationships Face Greater Risks. (2012)
According to data from the New Family Structures Study, led by Mark Regnerus at the University of Texas, children raised by homosexual parents are dramatically more likely than peers raised by married heterosexual parents to suffer from a host of social problems. Among them are strong tendencies, as adults, to exhibit poor impulse control; suffer from depression and thoughts of suicide; need mental health therapy; identify themselves as homosexual; choose cohabitation; be unfaithful to partners; contract sexually transmitted diseases; be sexually molested; have lower income levels; drink to get drunk; and smoke tobacco and marijuana. The study of 2,988 people between the ages of 18 and 39, including 175 adults raised by lesbian mothers and 73 raised by gay fathers, marks the second-largest data sample ever used to examine the issue. The U.S. Census Bureau had a larger sample, but didn't probe as deeply as the 40 measures Regnerus used.
