The Mentalist is my favourite show. By far.

Solving the crime isn't so much what I watch it for though, I think I like it because wondering how they (or Jane) will get the killer is always interesting. Even if we can work it out along with him, obviously he can't just go and slap the cuffs on based on what he's simply seen and perceived very well -
There's always some level of tomfoolery, or a gambit, which makes it both riveting and often hilarious.

The characters too, the general CBI team are all likeable and have some genuine personality that makes you want to root for them, unlike a lot of shows.

But the main thing I love is that I can go back and watch any episode and enjoy it.
I think it's because it is well broken up - a lot of the episodes focus on one singular case rather than constantly following Jane's obsession with Red John, which keeps it fresh.
And then, when they decide to pursue Red John some more you have to ponder again and wonder how Jane will overcome whatever hurdle he faces, with the team behind him (or not) -

It's bloody awesome.

And finally, what I also love about this outstanding show is that it doesn't fall where many other shows do.
It has kept its continuity, it still makes sense, there are no gaping plot holes even 6 seasons in. The writer's haven't dropped the ball on it, and that's what makes it stand out. I would have expected some plot error by now in most shows, but you watch this show from first season to last and you will find it is still correct within its story.

So yeah - The Mentalist - 10/10 - WATCH IT!!!
