It was interesting to see some of the same faces from 2 years ago... |

Having read a huge amount of the threads and boards on here, I've noticed that the majority of "activity" is from folk who joined between 2 and many years ago. As a frequenter of forums of many types, I've noticed also that when this happens, it can be very hard for new folk to "break in" to the "members guild"...much like moving to a new school and coming up against all those kids who have been at the school since day dot. This is not a complaint, just an observation...as a newbie,a hermit and an Aussie. |

G'morning all. Thought I'd just drop in to see what was happening, and all I don't see, is fewer & fewer peeps dropping in. Seems a shame but I suppose life goes on & waits for very few. The days here grow shorter and the nights cooler so soon y'all will complain about the heat etc. Still, it'll be a change from snow! Have a real good day friends

Thought I'd better look in, it's about a month since I broke down the door and I see no one has followed me here. I note daylight saving has hit at least some parts of the U.S of A, and while we still have ours, I doubt it's here much longer. A bit like thread sadly. Anyhow, I wish you all a happy day and don't let the snow get you down

Seems like this is a thread to introduce yourself. I also am curious to see what my profile on here looks like. I just read through the last year of posts, mostly about the weather with just a few notes to get to know you a bit. Several new people in the last 3 months. But they didn't come back. I have tried to come to forums several times and couldn't find them. Last two times I was successful. Maybe that means I have learned how to get here.
Weather here in Western AR has been milder than most other places. Looking forward to some sunny days but they just took them out of the forecast. I am thinking I better quit dreaming about going solar if I am going to continue living here. Which I hope to do. Hope someone responds over their morning cup of coffee. And you all have a good day. |

Thanks for the welcome. I don't actually drink coffee, but most people I know have to have it first thing hence the greeting.

Ducks are so cute on there own. Since this is the over 50 section, does anybody remember how the dime stores would sell the baby chicks/ peeps that had been dyed pastel colors while still in the shell the week before Christmas? I don't know if PETA put an end to that practice or if it just fell out of favor.

I remember the baby chicks. I'm pretty sure it's illegal across the country now.

i don't know about the colored chicks and all that. i was referring to a phrase that foszil said to me "like a box of fluffy ducks". since i'm from texas, i had no idea what he was talking about since people outside of texas talk funny, so i did a little investigating...
(i think new zealanders and australians are more familiar with this phrase) The origin is almost certainly a play on chirpy, meaning cheerful or lively, and it's linked to chirpy as a bird, an expression of carefree happiness common in the nineteenth century. Box of birds is also often to be found much earlier, but solely in the literal sense of a box containing, for example, racing pigeons or chickens. We might guess the two were stuck together to make chirpy as a box of birds as a superlative that was later truncated into the idiom. But no trace exists in the record before the short form appeared. It's likely it wasn't needed: chirpy is found long before chirpy as a bird. New Zealanders do very occasionally use chirpy as a box of birds but "like chirpy as a bird" it appears in the written record more recently than box of birds. Whatever its origins and history, it has humorously evolved: box of fluffies, box of fluffy chooks, box of budgies and particularly box of fluffy ducks, are all ways to say that you're happy or that everything is going well. |

Good to see you've been doing your home-work to wile away the dark hours instead of shovelling snow.(not something I've ever done!) Anywho, I trust you've been behaving & remain fit and frivolous. Autumn (fall) has arrived here with malice in mind, though I'm cautiously optimistic that winter will be mild. "Tiz grand to note that you, like oneself, remain "like a box of fluffy ducks!

I like the box of fluffy ducks quote and background. Thanks. Guess I won't pick it up since no one would understand. :-)
