Cutting out the middleman: Hospital goes into insurance biz

"We target people that are stable, family people who expect at this point, you know, that the insurance is going to be taken care of by their employer," said the president of Marcos Kitchen & Bath Installations.

Facing a 20 percent increase from his old insurance carrier this year, Perivolaris' broker suggested he try a new plan, from a brand-new insurer tied to one of the area's biggest hospitals, North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. He decided to gamble on the upstart, because its rate was $10,000 cheaper, and its network would allow his staff to keep the doctors who were on their old plan.

We may see a lot more of this due to the amount of money it takes to run a hospital on a daily basis, and the screwing they're taking, both doctors and facilities, under the ACA payment plans with delays in payments and restrictions on pricing and procedures.

I have a sister that is an RN working for Kaiser. They have a program that was mentioned in the article and has been working for quite a while now.

Kaiser has instituted ways to help prevent rather than fight disease as a way to offer better care at a substantial savings to all. A result of direct involvement in health care, not medical care.

But if we really want change for the health industry, then the profit motive must go. No one should profit on the ills of another. For one, that automatically eliminates the 20% profit of the insurance companies promised by Odumbocare.

And with the large profits of these huge conglomerate hospital systems, what would that save? Another 20%, more?

And then we need to address the pharma, drugs that require more drugs to counteract the first drug and then another drug to counter that. Where does it stop, death by drugs or death by not being able to afford the drugs. A vicious circle.

In the immortal words of Hippocrates..

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.

Walking is man's best medicine.

It is far more important to know what person the disease has than what disease the person has.

So that leads to another discussion, our food....
