The Eternal War
BY
Ronnie Lee Jeffires
When he wakes up he hears the screams, the insults and the sound of the winter wind. The man feels the cold biting at his skin, the aching of his bones, and the discomfort of the hard concrete. When the man wakes up he sees the dark heavy storm clouds, the meager camps made by the forgotten of society, and the privileged members of society passing by him as though he was invisible. When the he wakes up he tastes the dryness in his throat like a large cotton ball. He goes to sleep and wishes to find a way to escape but nightmares haunt his sleep. The man’s stomach twists into tight knots lacking of nourishment, there is no comfortable position in which to sleep.
He finds a home, love, family, and acceptance. The sights, sounds, and familiar feelings of the street however have been permanently seared into his mind, his heart, and his soul. He wanted to escape the streets but even in his home with his family he is still trapped on the streets of his mind. He is a soldier in an eternal war he can never escape.

The Cure
BY
Ronnie Lee Jeffires
There once was a very prominent and well respected doctor who had devoted his life to helping heal people of their ailments. One day after many years of research and hard work the doctor finally felt that he had accomplished his life’s work.
The doctor had created a vaccines that could cure all of the common ailments of humans everything from the common cold to cancer. Everyone got the vaccine and the doctor single handedly made humans able to live forever.
The doctor thought that by eliminating all diseases and giving humans the ability to live forever crime would also cease. After many years the doctor realized that the vaccine he had created had not been entirely successful because even though physical disease was gone there was still jealousy, hatred, greed, and evil those were matters of the heart that no vaccine could ever cure.

The Night in Question
By
Ronnie Lee Jeffires
The man woke to the sound of an impending question. “Where were you on the night in question sir?” I don’t know I haven’t the slightest idea why I am even here” he responded. “Don’t play dumb with me you inconsiderate lowlife you know exactly why you’re here the detective growled.
The truth of the matter was Jack Simpson really did not know why he was in an interrogation room at the local police station but it seemed as though this detective could not understand that. Jack tried to think back on the events of the day but his mind was empty almost as if someone had wiped his mind clean like a hard drive on a computer he could not remember a thing except for his name and that was about it.
Jack looked down at his hands that were cuffed in front of him they were scuffed and bloody. All of a sudden he was made aware of his senses as a wave of pain racked his body and caused him to ache in every joint of his body. “Maybe I was in a fight?” he thought to himself. Fights were indeed the norm for him it seemed everyone that crossed his path hated him and elected to come to blows with him at one point or another that always happened.
All of a sudden Jack was out of the chair, the police station, and his cuffs. He was now walking down the long stretch of highway that he traveled every day to go to work. “This makes no sense.” Jack thought and figured it was some kind of bizarre dream that he would eventually wake up from. The pavement on the highway however felt as solid as anything he had ever felt so maybe it was not a dream at this point the only thing that Jack was sure of was that he was in a deep state of confusion.
Jack walked down the familiar highway for a distance and then he found himself back in the interrogation room once again. He asked the detective to clarify what happened to which the detective replied “do you not remember trying to walk away from the damn accident?” So Jack’s first assumption had been correct he had been in an accident.
“What am I being charged with?” Jack asked. “Hit and run, DUI, and manslaughter” the detective replied. Jack now knew where he had been on the night in question as his memory came flooding back and he realized that what he had thought was a dream was in fact a harsh reality.
