Our lil mini yorkie's have this from a pup our friend was baby sitting.
I had seen it in the paper a week or so ago say there was a major out break of it in this area. About a month or 2 ago "Duffy" had got a Doberman from the pound up by her in WA. she worked on that dog for weeks forcing it to eat & spent a good amount on meds & vet bills.. I couldn't copy the snopes page for some reason to paste here. This one will give you a idea thou. http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/dogflu.asp This one was second on the list when I yahoo'd it.. Dog Flu Spreads Worry Nationwide New Disease Kills Dogs in at Least Seven States Sept. 27, 2005 — A newly discovered virus has killed dogs in at least seven states, and veterinarians, kennel operators and pet owners are concerned because researchers say there is no vaccine and dogs do not have immunity to the new flu. Dr. Cynda Crawford, an immunologist at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine, said in an audio interview posted on the university Web site that the disease is only deadly in rare cases -- about 10 percent in puppies and old dogs -- but is of concern because it is spreading rapidly. It is believed that the new virus may have mutated from an equine influenza strain, she said. Like most flu viruses, it can be spread by air, as well as by contact, and the populations of dogs most at risk are those in shelters, kennels, boarding operations or other situations where a lot of dogs are housed under one roof, she said. The disease could also spread in parks where pet owners let their dogs off the leash to socialize, vets say. Dog parks are a perfect playground for contagious diseases because when animals share toys and water dishes, they also are sharing germs. The symptoms of the disease include coughing and sneezing, and there is concern that it could be spread in vet waiting rooms, Crawford said. "When you bring a bunch of dogs together under one roof, if a dog happens to be infected, then the virus will spread rapidly," she said. She compared the situation to what happens with young children in school. As yet, there is no test for the flu that vets can administer, she said. The virus is too new for any dogs to have developed immunity to it, so pet owners should watch their dogs carefully for any symptoms. "The concern is that the dog population on the North American continent is wholly 100 percent susceptible," Crawford said. Seattle veterinarian Dr. Kenneth McKim recently treated some dogs with "kennel cough," but said the new virus is different. "It's a more severe disease (with) high fever," McKim said. "It's got more complications with pneumonia and congestion." There have been outbreaks of this new dog flu in kennels, race tracks and shelters along the East Coast. But not on the West Coast, yet. "It's something that we're going to be watching for in the Northwest," McKim said. "There have been no reported cases of it here yet, but I think it's something that veterinarians are going to be on the watch for." The majority of the deaths have occurred at greyhound tracks in Florida, Massachusetts, Arizona, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Texas and Iowa, but there have been documented cases in some kennels and shelters. Vets stress that the flu is no reason for pet owners to panic, but they should take some precautions. If you take your dog to a dog park, bring the dog's own water dish and toys, they say. If you kennel your dogs, or take them to a doggie day care, vets say you should make sure the facility is clean, well-ventilated and requires all dogs to be current on their shots. |

Geez, it's just like hearing about some new disease hitting kids. We sure do love our dogs, don't we?
Makes me wonder. Dogs and humans share a lot of diseases, maybe our symptems are a bit different, but could this be something new that can spread to humans too? Have you heard? I hope your puppy dogs fare well, we feel as helpless with them when they're sick as we do with our kids. |

How sad!! i am sorry for all you ladies and your dogs being sick or dying! I was strongly considering a jack russell for my boy for xmas but now i am waiting after reading this news. I used to breed staffordshire terriers and one xmas after my female threw 13 pups I had to sit and watch these adorable puppies die in my arms. One by one. It broke my heart. My female passed a few years ago of old age but i still had the male until moving to our new home where in the middle of the move someone stole my ol boy. Its been 4yrs and i miss my dogs!

my dog did have kennel cough that turned into viral pneumonia. it is determined by a blood test, and exam.
the dog was a lean, fit dobie before he went to the pound for a dastardly deed. he weighed in at 79 lbs. however, he caught the kennel cough because he did not have a bordatella shot, and a dog must have it about 7 days before it comes into contact with the virus. it can be picked up anywhere, even at the groomers' where we later went. he became skinnier than shift, not wanting to eat or even pee which was an effort. it took 2 weeks to get over the virus itself. but the dog yacked, hacked, and by this time, lost 10 lbs. it has taken l month to get him back on his feet........ he had to go on a bland science diet of dogfood which i made into a gruel like porage?, and put it in a turkey baster forcing it down his throat.one to two tablespoons at a time. then, plenty of water as he was dehydrated. science diet is more expensive but it has less by products said the vet. then, there was a supplement to sprinkle on the food because of gastrointestinal upset. this was an ordeal that i hope never to repeat in my life. then, i came down with something like it. it took about 3 weeks to get over that. end of story |

I have 5 chihuahuas and my mom has a poodle. I went to a parade and took my tiny female chihuahua, Sissy. A few days later she came down with something that was a sneeze and a cough like symptom. She had a fever and was listless, she wouldn't drink or eat. Not like her at all. She likes to eat, and run and play. Very vibrant girl. I took her to the Vet a couple of days later and they gave her Clavomox 250 mg. (Augmentin) I was told. She ate her regular food, nothing bought special. I only feed my dogs food without dyes, additives or beef or preservatives, no corn or wheat. Good stuff.
Anyway, it was a day or so later that my other female got the very same thing. Luckily, I got plenty of Antibiotics, just in case the others come down with it. They did. Then a male pup then my moms poodle and then my other little pup. Aaauuunnddd, the daddy. It was very contageous. They are fine now. The trick is also to have them up on ALL their shots. Shamefully, mine were out by a couple of months. All caught up now. This illness hits fast and makes them very sick. Kat |
