Cat, do you leave the room on your own? Or is it something he makes you feel like you need to do? This is suspicious. I was engaged once to a man whose family did not live where I could have been introduced, but I once heard him refer to me as "his friend in CITY) to his mother. I thought that was really strange considering we had been together for 4 years and were engaged, and supposedly she was aware. I was insulted. A few months later, we broke up.
He's definitely hiding something. This doesn't sound right.

there is always a reason whether you like the reason or not. i would ask him without being accusatory.
