A team from the Fallon Naval Air Station has taken away an cannon ball that a Carson City man was trying to sell.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said teams were not able to X-ray it to determine if it was live, so the federal bomb disposal team took it away to deal with it.

11:40 a.m. update:

The X-ray machine used to check the cannon ball could not penetrate it, so another machine is being brought in from the Fallon Naval Air Station, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office bomb squad has x-rayed a cannonball near Carson High School thought to be from the Civil War to determine if it is live.

"We've already determined it is not a threat to the area." Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

A man was trying to sell the cannonball in a yard sale in the Saliman Road and Robinson Street area, Furlong said. Someone pointed out to him that the cannonballs can still be live.

"If it is live, we will take custody of it and dispose of it," Furlong said.

The sheriff's office is waiting for the X-ray film to develop so they can determine if it is live, Furlong said.

The man has had the cannonball for about 20 years.

This was a block away from my house! What a circus and the local Law Enforcement here had no clue what to do, they looked like Keystone cops! It is embarrassing!

Sheriff Kenny Furlong is such an idiot and his people in key positions are as well, they have no experience but are in place because they were key people who helped get him elected. I have personally known him for many years and he has destroyed the Sheriff's Office here in town. He cant wait to get in front of the press, that's why he doesn't have a spokesperson like most Sheriff's Offices have.

Unfortunately Carson City government is nothing more then a good old boys club. His dad was an elected official here in town and that's the only reason Kenny got elected, that's why most people around here get elected. In the last election 98% of the Sheriff Department employees and Officer's supported his opponent and every Officers Association and Law Enforcement Orgs in the area supported his opponent. He is one Republican I will vote for a Democrat over. Hell, he bought his daughter a condo a few years back and her and her boyfriend were cooking meth in it and it blew up. She has been picked up numerous times on serious drug charges, not possession but like sales and manufacturing and seems to always get off with a slap on the wrist.

Also on a side note in Nevada you don't need to have a Law Degree to be a judge. I learned that two election cycles ago. For a City Court Judge or Justice of the Peace there are no requirements including a law degree. One of the judges never even went to college and both keep getting elected because of the good old boys system, just like the Sheriff here in Nevada, another position ANYONE can be elected to.
