It would be hard enough(as Iraq showed us)to find and secure his chemical weapons but also be extremely dangerous given the civil war in Syria. Who would put their troops in the middle of a war to find and secure the weapons? U.N troops? Russian troops? international troops? don't think so...it would take years to find and destroy these chemical weapons. This seems to be just another "feel good" liberal way out of a fiasco brought on by an incompetent and weak president. |

It would be hard enough(as Iraq showed us)to find and secure his chemical weapons but also be extremely dangerous given the civil war in Syria. Who would put their troops in the middle of a war to find and secure the weapons? U.N troops? Russian troops? international troops? don't think so...it would take years to find and destroy these chemical weapons. This seems to be just another "feel good" liberal way out of a fiasco brought on by an incompetent and weak president. Interesting and very narrow speculations. A relatively small and barely visible amount of Russian troops have been stationed in Syria ever since the old days of the Warsaw Pact alliances. It would certainly be an excellent coup in world prestige, should Putin wish it, for Russian troops to have the priceless image of 'peace protectors' if they do openly take over the major chemical dumps in Syria and invite UN inspection which will develop into a joint Un-Russian force or simply Russian troops to be on site to monitor the chemical dumps. You can't put a price on that type of image. Russian troops are the most feared in the middle East as ever since the US Marine Barracks were blown up in Lebanon back in the 80's. The last thing most terrorists want are Russian Spetsnaz troops on the loose coming after them again. They found the terrorists that blew up the Marines. While Putin's image improves the world over, it certainly doesn't mean any corresponding loss of prestige to the US military. A possible toe-to-toe confrontation was avoided by both sides that on one hand was not well thought out by an amateur 'idealist' and a professional of very diverse background who knew how to keep his 'cool'.
